Thanks for the info. I can't grip screws so i also use the "little yellow thing" as mentioned by wahnula. I think it is called a retractor. I don't do field work anymore just bench. A handheld or bench magnifier is a must for me. Dental picks (found at local hardware stores)are also good...

Try booting into safe mode. If it is still really slow then you may have other issues. Worth trying what TomCologne mentioned using Recovery Console and doing a repair.

The old display adapter drivers might be getting in the way.
Boot into safe mode.
Go to device manager, display adapter and uninstall the original display adapter. Reboot.
The compatibility-mode drivers might be loading from the DOSSTART.BAT or the SYSTEM.INI. Maybe even the WIN.INI Load or Run line.Might be worth having a look there.
Is it possible to remove the drive and slave it to another system for data recovery?

Is your HP Recovery Software on a set of factory CD's that came with your PC or is it stored on a Recovery Partition on your hard drive?

If your modem came with a cd or if you have the utility cd for your mobo then you might want to have a look there first. Most retail modems came with a cd that had phone center software on it that would do exactly that as well as caller id, voice mail ect.
I haven't bought a dial-up...
