Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check).

Hi people.

Ive got a 160GB Maxtor hard drive that is less than 6 months old.

Ive got it partitioned into two drives.

One of these partitions no longer has a name when I go into my computer and is just called 'local disc'.

The computer tells me I have this error when I try and access the drive in command window as my computer crashes if I open it and click on the drive.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to recover the data on this dics or have I lost it for good?

Does the partition still have a drive letter assigned? Try checking the disk for errors. Open a command prompt (Start >Run >type cmd). Once the command prompt is open type chkdsk /f D: where D: is the letter assigned to the partition.

Also, for a more thorough drive check use the chkdsk d: /r command is this will both locate file system errors and mark bad sectors on the disk.
