Hi,

I noticed this forum and the premise of what discussions are meant to take place
The words we use and how we use them often reflect our professionalism.

As I have recently been prelimilary diagnosed with Dyspraxia, I was wonder how this fitted in with the concept that our words and the way we use them reflect our profesionalism.

I often find I use the wrong words, mispell them, transpose them and even sometimes offend quite accidently and unintentionally.

Many based on this would say it's because I am unprofessional, especialy using the concept of this forum...

Well now it turns out it's because I have a disability, so wouldn't assuming someones professionalism based on their literary skills actualy be discrimination.

How does one change or improve these skills if it is based on a physical way the brain is wired, if you are born with dyspraxia, there is nothing that can be done to change the way your brain interprets things or the way you express yourself.

You cannot always tell that some one may be suffering from Dyslexia or Dyspraxia, and I know we all make assumptions, concious or not, so how can one deal with this?

You cannot teach someone with torrets to stop swearing or someone with parkinson disease to stop shaking.

So how do you go about changing something which is inherently hard wired wrong.

Kjv, I don't think you can even consider making such comments when you have no knowledge of the reasoning behind why I feel that way.

I respect that you have a different opinion, where as I think they are scum!

Do you think the Birmingham 6 or the Guildford 4 feel the same way, or the Brazillian guy on the london underground or.. or.. or..?

If only it was one bad apple spoiling the barrel, in my experience it's the other way round.

But with respect for Cajun, yourself and this forum, let's just put that behind us and stick to the topic ;-)

I think STC would be a good place to continue that discussion.

1DMF - I watched a documentary about dyspraxia and dyslexia recently, and they had been pioneering a 'new' treatment based around improving balance.

I know that sounds daft, but the results were astounding.

I can't find info on it at the moment - will post back when I do.

Thanks Fee, I'll have to check it out when you find it.

I don't have obvious motor co-ordination problems, I don't walk funny (well I guess that's always a matter of opinion!), but I cannot do fine detail, ie I cannot draw, write neat and I get extreme pain and cramp within minutes of using a pen/pencil. I cannot do DIY, I can't put a shelf up staight, or draw a straight line even with a ruler! I'm all fingers and thumbs and I'm pretty clumbsy too.

Yet throw a ball at me and I'll catch it, I was always good at cricket, rounders, hockey , rugby (not football though?).

So it seems to manifest itself at a minute level, but I'm interested in anything that might help.

Now that I have taken my exam on wednesday (cross fingers!), the OU said they would contact me to discuss a full diagnosis, so I'll see what they have to say and take it from there I guess.

The documentary did say that there is no discerable lack of balance, but that exercises to improve it still seemed to help considerably.

In fact, even seemingly daft things like showering with your eyes closed; standing on one leg - that sort of stuff.

Reading the Dyspraxia description, it reminds me of the former US president, George W Bush - sometimes used the wrong word, consistently used incorrect pronunciation of some words, preferred to call people by a nickname he invented. This gives me new insight.

Seeing that English is not my first language and sometimes when tired or just plain mentally exhausted I will use the odd wrong word that makes people shake their head as I just translate from my first language into English and it just makes no sense to them I think I can partially feel what you experience.
People seem to have gotten used to it and depending on how well they know me they ask what I actually mean or if they do not know me well enough or are too polite to ask they just nod and smile.
I guess to your professionalism question of the beginning, you can be professional even when using the wrong word(s) at times.

Joe,
it's a common issue on Tek-Tips and other forums, where everyone presumes all visting are a)English speaking and b) based in the USA. Therefore a little trick you could try, is to put a quote in your signature in your natvie language. It makes some people think before posting.

We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.

Perhaps Fred, but I aint no financial and war criminal and dyspraxia is no excuse for being one either!

Westi -> I guess it must be similar in someways, i do feel at times i'm talking a different language that no-one seems to understand and vice versa - [lol]

The politics of President Bush are not at issue.

However, it should be noted that this comment exemplifies the difficulties that surround this condition and the frustrations that 1DMF and others who must live with the disability of dyspaxia.

In the opening, 1DMF offered the following:
I often find I use the wrong words, mispell them, transpose them and even sometimes offend quite accidently and unintentionally.

Many based on this would say it's because I am unprofessional,
When an similar example is given from another person who presents the same symptoms, the basis turns to politics.

That doesn't do the disability, nor those who suffer, any favors.

No perhaps not if taken the wrong way and is assumed it's their disability someone has a problerm with

However, as I feel so strongly that he should swing from the same rope as Sadam as the murderer that he is along with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and if they don't pull their fingers out Cameron and Ohbama as well.

I couldn't care what disability Bush or the others may or may not suffer from.

Do we care Hitler was disabled? Or Chairman Mao?

Sorry you may call me calus but I have no sympathy for these tyrants regardless of them having a disability!

That doesn't make me prejudice against a disability or the disabled, just prejudice against tyrant murdering bastards!

But YMMV!

I agree, Cajun. If a sufferer of any condition suspects another of being a fellow sufferer, the natural reaction should be sympathetic and supportive.

You just don't know how, given the same circumstances, any other person would behave. Political point-scoring comes a distant last to analysing the full situation appropriately, once in possession of the full facts.

It is time for pacifists to stand up and fight for their beliefs.

I guess that makes you a better person than me. I never have and never will have sympathy for genecidal murdering tyrants, unfortuantely sympathy for these people is what breeds terrorists and fanatics.

Nazi properganda proved that, no matter what, you must stand firm and never give these people an excuse, no sympathy, no leway, nothing!

Unless you are prepared to have another holocaust?

But again, lets step away from the politics, it's far too deep and difficult, as the current behaviour of Israel shows.

Even after everything that has happended, they still think two wrongs make a right!

So the argument is immutable!

Check out my handle and see just how much you think this is appropriate.

I don't think I am a better person than anyone. You seem, however, to be inflexible so I shall comment no further.

I was afraid that I would be opening a can of worms.

My point is simply this. Dyspaxia doesn't give a damn about your race, nationality, gender, religion, politics, hair color, or your shoe size. The condition is, in every sense of the word, non-discriminatory. Regardless of any of those factors, you either have the condition, perhaps in varying degrees, or you don't. By that same token, no one should be excluded from the conversation for any of the above reasons.

And when one brings religion, politics, race, or other irrelevant attribute into the discussion, they marginalize the disease. The focus becomes the attribute, as clearly evidenced by the last few posts, and not the disease. That is completely counter-productive to the intention of raising awareness of the disease. You can't focus on the condition when you marginalize it with racial, national, religious or political commentary.
