1. check out the arcserve logs...
I think it's important to note that Sun shipped a defective install CD with Solaris 2.8 You should begin by inserting the Software 1/2 CD and 'boot cdrom' from Openboot. James.Horvath@truedatasan.com

Try running a new job but set file estimate to disabled in Backup|Options. If you get satisfactory backups this is, at least, a compromise but not a solution. James.Horvath@truedatasan.com

I hate to tell people how to patch their systems. In many cases there's a good technical foundation for such a decision, like the O2ksp2. I still haven't bothered diggin around all the security permissions to obtain credentials anywhere near to what they were before the sp2.
In any event, the...

Hey Matt, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get SQL to work, however it is slower. Most of the problems of this nature I have seen involving the database were a result of some security problem.
Anyway, I am quite sure there is NO way to directly convert SQL to VLDB using a utility...

I highly recommend reading the Microsoft Whitepapers on Exchange 5.5 (DR). http://www.microsoft.com/Exchange/techinfo/administration/55/default.asp
There are some important considerations that you must evaluate for your environment (OS, PDC). If you are obsessed with painless DR do consider...

For Arcserve 2000, the supported Microsoft Exchange Server version is V4.0 through V5.5 ( SP3 ).
Don't expect CA support to troubleshoot your logs unless you get Exchange up to SP3.
Give me a vote if this helps you out.
