    Thanks - that pretty much confirms the conclusions I came to. Having thought it through a bit more - ARCserve is not doing anything wrong, so thre will not be a fix. Now jobs are set to run to a specific tape name.

    We have also had major problems with McAfee AV, with both ARCserve 2000 and Backup Exec. I think McAfee have now admitted there is a problem and are working on it. We found that the only way to get Backups to the expected speed was to uninstall the AV software, disabling had a limited effect.
