    Password Protect Arcserve 9

You can install ARCserve to a different area, but it will always create a share \\servername\arcserve$ which it needs for remote management. Anyone who can run srvmgr or sclist will be able to find the installation path. Other than changing the password not really sure what you can do about...

    Dual-NIC Backups

If you utilise the "Client Agent for ARCserve" you can configure it to use a different IP. You should be using this anyway to ensure the system state is backed up correctly

Overwriting of tapes with same name but different ID's

Thanks - that pretty much confirms the conclusions I came to. Having thought it through a bit more - ARCserve is not doing anything wrong, so thre will not be a fix. Now jobs are set to run to a specific tape name.

Error E4107 in ARCserver 2000 Advanced Server

There are two reasonably good CA docs on this: http://support.ca.com/techbases/asnt/18080.html http://support.ca.com/techbases/as2000/as2k-1521.html They explain how the Dbase works (or not) and has some fixes. Couple of points: If you are runing a dbfix then make sure no jobs kick in or that...

Overwriting of tapes with same name but different ID's

This is partly a request for help and partly a warning. I have come across an issue with tapes being overwritten when two jobs give their respective tapes the same name. Using AS2k SP4, on a Win2kSP2 platform, with a stacked library system consisting of 2*TL891's and a TL890 expansion unit...

ArcserveIT not writing to activity log

Seen this when server is very low on disk space, once the main data has been backed up and swap file gets smaller then it can write to the log again, just a thought. alternatively you can rename \\server\arcserve$\log\arcserve.log (this is the activity log) to something else and start a new...

Failed to obtain version info for server \\servername (EC=53)

Hi, I'm am getting this error when trying to connect remotely to certain ARCserve servers. "Failed to obtain version info for server \\servername (EC=53)" I am in domain admins, connecting from Citrix WTS session to W2k boxes through ASMGR. I have checked the rights on the ARCserve...

    encrytion data

I heard back from CA and apparently its only available on certain editions. More particularly it seems to be something to do with the export laws in the US surrounding 128 bit encryption. i.e. it;s available in the US and Canada but not EMEA. There are ways round this. It was suggested to me...

    Clearing Activity Log

if you want to keep the infomration then you can just move the \\server\arcserve$\log\arcserve.log to another location and then ARCserve creates a new one when it needs to write again. Bear in mind that sometimes the Activity log is all the historical info you have abot previous jobs especially...

    encrytion data

Has anyone solved this as we have the same problem. CA Support have suggested that 128 Encyption SP needs to be running on the client server - but we have tried this without success. My call is still open so if I sort it I shall post here. In the menatime if anyone has any ideas then please...

Hi, We are looking at this problem too. I have over 20 of these cursed libraries in the environment I support. We are running SP4, the latest devicesp.exe from CA, plus 7 extra patches, the latest SCSI drivers, tape and library firmware and still we get problems. I have ben looking into this...

Unable to Merge 1 tape from multiple tape backups

Assuming your database is OK. Try the following link: http://support.ca.com/techbases/asnt/18080.html The important bit is: Q: How do I do a merge without using cat files? A: This requires making a change to your NT/2000 registry. This procedure, and the subsequent merging of database...

    Multiple Filters - HELP!

Reckon you'll need 2 jobs. One which does the whole server with an exclude of LIVEWORK filter in, then a second job appending which selects only the LIVEWORK folder and excludes (via filter) all files modified before the date you did the one-off backup. The only problem with this is if you...

    Arcserve Backups very slow

Bit of a shot in the dark here but have you chekced the SCSI Adapter drivers (see link). Worked like a charm for us, with MSL5000 series libraries http://wwss1pro.compaq.com/support/reference_library/viewdocument.asp?source=EM020409_CW02.xml&dt=3 Link references the following error found in...

AS2000 Database Empty for Restore - huh?

You could try checking the astpsdat files for corruption: from cmd prompt get to the arcserve directory then go for the following: dbcheck -a -L arcserve;admin;secret astpsdat and/or dbfix -a -L arcserve;admin;secret astpsdat This will take longer the bigger your files are, you may get error...

Can't stop job, even after reboot

See this method I sent to my team regarding stopping jobs which won't. Note that you can use the 0000000#.job files like scripts and add them back in. The best method is to cancel the alerts on the desktop if you can. Also the patch mentioned earlier did stop most occurances of this, it...

Slow remote backup speeds using client agent 2000 SP4

Batch files can be run as a pre job and post jobs. For stopping the remote server as well, I guess using psexec will be able to do it, with sc command: "sc stop McShield" will do for the local machine, 'psexec \\remoteserver "sc stop McShield"' for remote, there are a load...

Slow remote backup speeds using client agent 2000 SP4

We have also had major problems with McAfee AV, with both ARCserve 2000 and Backup Exec. I think McAfee have now admitted there is a problem and are working on it. We found that the only way to get Backups to the expected speed was to uninstall the AV software, disabling had a limited effect.

    *cat files/job ids

Stacy, There is a couple of articles on this on the CA support website, the best I found is: http://support.ca.com/techbases/as2000/as2k-1521.html This is for ARCserve 2000. If you are using 6.61 then you could try using the repair function in the dbutil.exe applet. Cheers.
