Agreed. We need everyone to sound off as to whether they intend to go.

Count me in.

(This would be much easier if we had everyone's email addresses - then we could just set up an e-vite)

Ok, so far, we have:

anotherhiggins Durham, NC
chiph Raleigh, NC
Chopstik Near Hopewell, VA
Dollie Raleigh, NC

What I will do for now, just to get things temporarily settled, is set a reservation for Saturday at 5.00 at Bottoms Up Pizza (for 10 people). If y'all would prefer one of the breweries (Richbrau, Tobacco Company, etc), then let me know and I'll see what I can do. I'm going to walk over to the Omni for lunch just to get some contact info and will post it back after that time. Let's get GeekFest '05 rolling...

I'll just set it for 15 people, that'll give us some extras just in case... The more the merrier, I say...

Ok, talked with the people over at the Omni, and they appear to be overbooked. So much for that choice. Their information, in case you're interested, is:

Omni Hotel
100 S. 12th Street
Richmond, VA 23219
804.344.7000
ahuggins@omnihotels.com (the Front Desk Mgr)

Some of the other hotels can be found here. There are probably several other resources, but you're looking for something in the area where the majority of these places are located.

I'm in. Either Sat-Sun if I catch a ride (it turns out all the Raleighites live in prestigious North Raleigh), or maybe just Saturday if I drive. My truck goes in the shop first thing tomorrow with an electrical problem, so I'm gambling that I'll have it back at least by Sat. morning - I meant to put it in last week but things didn't work out).

See you Saturday!
Tim

Chopstik: 5 o'clock at Bottoms Up Pizza sounds fine to me. Thanks again for being our eyes on the ground in Richmond.

All right Raleigh Contingent (er, um, 'Troglodytes') - let's figure out this driving thing. I don't see any reason for the four of us to drive separately.

First question: Who wants to stay overnight, who is interested in coming home Saturday night.

Currently, I'm thinking I'd like to head back to Raleigh Saturday night. But if we are having too much fun and I imbibe too much to drive home, I'd be OK with staying the night.

Second question: Smokers? I do not smoke (except for the occasional cigar) and wouldn't want anyone to smoke in my car, but I wouldn't mind riding with a smoker.

I just responded to your FAQ, Chip, so you should have my email address.

Dollie: you haven't posted to this thread since 10/14. Are you still planning on going?

I'm in! Looking forward to seeing you all this weekend.

John,

I'm not opposed to driving a group, but I don't volunteer for two reasons: First, I normally smoke in the truck, and even though I would not smoke during the trip I'm afraid the residual atmosphere might still bother non-smokers. Secondly, there's still a small chance the stupid truck will still be in the shop.

Of course, I'm sure any of us who hitch a ride will contribute towards gas costs.

Actually, speaking of smokers, I have reserved a non-smoking area since I do not smoke. If that is an issue, I can change it. I'll go with majority rule here... I'll also need to confirm a hard number of attendees by Friday, so a head count would be good if that is possible.

I prefer to eat in non-smoking sections, but I will also yield to the majority if needed.

I'm interested in staying overnight -- I'd rather not be driving back when I'm tired and I definitely don't want to deal with the deer (the rut will be starting soon).

Looks like many of the downtown hotels are booked up. The "Sleep Inn" halfway to Petersburg has rooms, but if y'all are interested in something more up-scale, I can do that too (no $300/night rooms, though!). Perhaps we can get a count of the RDU people who want to stay over and what their acceptable price range might be?

As a smoker, I always expect to be in the minority and do mind a bit meeting in a nonsmoking area. If the urge strikes, I can always step outside for a moment. I'd much rather do that than ruin everyone else's evening (I even try to stand downwind if I'm walking outside with a nonsmoker!)

As for hotels, if I catch a ride with a group that wants to stay overnight, that's fine. I would prefer something in the $50-$80 range. It occurred to me that if Richmond is booked, we can head south on the interstate a few miles and watch the billboards.

Would you consider $92 a night? The Linden Row Inn has an Expedia special for that amount, and it's a three-star hotel that's in downtown Richmond.

Sorry, everybody. I and my son have to bow out. I can't get out of work and my daughter wants to celebrate her birthday that night instead of Sunday. Keep my abreast of Mid-Atlantic TT GeekFest. :)

Sorry, folks, although I suppose in context you figured out what I meant. Still, I must have sounded like a grade-A jackass before you read further. Another one of those stupid "little" words, as discussed in a thread a while back.

$92 is close enough for me. Do we need reservations?

Sorry guys, I've been kibbutzing instead of posting. School's been an adventure this semester (I just started college after a 20 year "break") and I think I'm in over my head just a bit. I have an algebra test next Tuesday, and it's on polynomials. I still have to figure out WHAT a polynomial is, then how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them. I've got a paper to work on and algebra to study this weekend to keep the grades up.

Driving up to Richmond and back for an evening meet would be difficult and I don't think I'll be able to make it.

My apologies! I'd love to meet everyone, but I didn't expect that my schoolwork would be taking up so much of my time!

Dollie,

Re: Polynomials

Code:
[white] If you divide them, they get lonely. If you multiply them, well, make sure they're adults first. However, this leads nicely into how to add polynomials. Curiously, if you subtract polynomials, the answer is always Three. No one is quite sure why.[/white]

Re: The Paper

[white]You can get any paper off the internet. HINT: you're already there...[/white]

Seriously, I'm sorry you can't make it this time, but I have a feeling there will be more GeekFests in the future.

Good luck with school stuff! (don't forget my tips!)

SilentAiche -

Did you get my email? If so, can you give me a call on my cellphone sometime today and we'll talk about hotels.
