Chester, VA is about 20-25 minutes south of Richmond and has quite a few hotels within a mile or two of I95. Holiday Inn Express, Ramada Inn, Quality Inn, Homewood Suites and Courtyard. I used to work at the Holiday Inn Express and it's quite nice (the cinnamon rolls at breakfast are to die for).

I smoke too, but do [notice I didn't forget this word]NOT[/notice I didn't forget this word] mind sitting in a non-smoking area if others want to. I can keep Tim company outside.

anotherhiggins -
I need you to call me at home - I'm making hotel reservations tonight and need your input. In case you didn't get the earlier email, check your hotmail account.

It seems that we have 5 people who will be there. I'll need to revise the numbers for the reservation, so just trying to make sure. Can anyone correct me if I'm wrong?

Is that all for the inaugural GeekFest 05 Mid-Atlantic? Please let me know if I've missed anyone. Thanks!

Chopstik,

Your count (5) looks correct to me. Thanks again for taking care of the local details!

John - I'm catching a ride with Chip. Let one of us know if you're in or going solo (I'll send my info to your other account).

I heard from John - he's calling the hotel and will make his own reservations. He'll meet us tomorrow at the house for the trek to Richmond.

Also, the reservation will be under the name "Chopstik". We're set for tomorrow evening. For those of you driving from out of town, drive safely and see you then!

The trip was great, and I had a terrific time meeting the people behind the handles. Richmond was a cool city, although the Raleighites are still confused how it was "closer". :)

The pizza (and beer) was all that was promised. However, being 200 yards south and 15 yards below the city's train station (yes, it's hard to visualize, but trust me, it's true) made it hard to concentrate on the serious business of eating, drinking, and talking trash about the Tek-Tips residents who declined to attend.

Here's a photo taken by our intrepid waitress, Charlotte.

Glad you guys had a good time, and thanks for the picture.

Saturday's GeekFest '05 was an absolute and total blast (my thanks to John for setting it up, to Chip for driving the Troglodites, to Chopstik for making the local arrangements, and to Tracey for not leaving me to smoke alone beneath the railroad tracks (see above post). I don't remember the last time I had so much fun or such a unique experience.

Of course, I've never traveled 125 miles to meet a bunch of strangers, either. I highly recommend it (no pun intended, as far as you know, but note the green bottles in the picture...) The glass on the left, seemingly 2/3 full of beer, was just a prop - I never actually saw a non-empty glass...

Seriously, I urge all TTers to attend their next available meet. You'll be surprised how much fun it is to meet the folks you've conversed with for so long, and how much different they might be from what you expected. Hint: Only one of the four folks I met for the first time on Saturday was remotely like what I expected; it was really cool to meet the real people.

(BTW: digital pictures add 30 pounds and a lot of gray hair. I actually look like Tom Cruise).

You know you're having a good meet when the waitress (Miss Charlotte was just awesome) when you meet at 5:00 PM and around 1:00 [red]AM[/red] Charlotte says, "Can you guys pay up now? You're welcome to stay, but I'd like to go home." Eight hours is a good meet; I didn't want it to end, thus our plans for the next Mid-Atlantic GeekFest in late March. Non-attendees from Saturday's inaugural (sp?) meet will be kidnapped and forced to pick up the TAB (you only wish that was a "keyboard joke)."

Seriously, ...

[purple]At this point, someone should be quoting from "The Princess Bride": "You keep using that word; I do not think it means what you think it means."[/purple]

Meet, fellow TTers, meet. You won't regret it.

Tim

You're going to serve Tab for GeekFest 06?! But, I don't like diet sodas... [tongue]

Chopstik,

Dude, if I can't spell "Tracy" correctly, do you expect me to get the drinks right???

anotherhiggins,

Dang, I knew I shouldn't have said that...

To answer your question, ChipH was the only TTer remotely on the same page as what I expected. If I addressed the issue with the rest of you, I might say more than you'd want said. I'll leave that to y'all.

I hesitate to even guess y'all's observations regarding [blue]me-with-a-beer-in-Richmond[/blue] vs. SilentAiche. Er, no hurry.

Chip, if you want advice on how to do that, all you apparently have to do is ask those of us that did not fit expectations... [rofl]

For some reason, I get that a lot... ;-)

I try never to fit anyone's expectations. I'm sure the tattoos and cowboy boots help with that.

Tim: if you were the only one that ever spelled my name with an 'e' I might be upset. However, when I log onto my computer at work that some "alternate spelling" is what comes up. I should have spoken up about it when I first started, but I was new and didn't want to be a pest.

I'm gratified to know that the others had as much fun as I did. It certainly was interesting. It didn't take long before we were all chatting like old friends (which I guess we all are, albeit until this weekend remotely).

Anyone notice how the one that seemed to meet most people's expectations is also the only one that's really in focus? I'm sure that must mean something.
