I thought Richmond got rid of its Troll roads (but then I remembered it still has a Dragon...)

The Cracker Barrell issue is political. There really isn't a good story to go along with it.

OK, kids. We need to decide on the location. I'd appreciate it if everyone could please post his or her preference. If you would rather your vote be 'blind' then feel free to email me at the address provided earlier in the thread.

Also, to the Triangle Contingent: we should decide if we want to carpool and if so who wants to drive.

I know of at least one other potential visitor who's up in Northern Virginia/DC area, but not sure if they'll be able to make it. But I don't think he'd go further south than Richmond if he does... He'll pop up in this thread if he wants to go, I suspect...

Not sure if you meant me. I've been watching the thread but doubt I can even make it to the corner bar in my area. Reasons are plenty (and lame):
1. I've been completely lame towards TT for the past 4 or 5 months - I'm juggling too many customers at present.
2. My wife will be out of town that weekend leaving me with the kids.
c. Did I mention that my life is pretty hectic?

I was entertaining the thought of Richmond but not much farther south, but I seriously doubt it. On the other hand, my brother lives in Richmond and I could combine it with a visit for some golf...

Probability that I can make it to Richmond: 5%
Probability that I can make it farther south: <1%
Probability than anyone cares: <1%

Note broken icon link as proof of my lameness...

John,

I smoke like a SOB. If I drive, which I'm certainly willing to do, the other Troglodites would probably be hanging their heads out the window like some brand of terrior. Not a pretty picture.

I'll not be offended if the others from the triangle ride to together and I drive alone.

As to location, I'm okay with anything. Perhaps a hotel with a restaurant would be good- eat, drink, visit, sleep, go home.

John,

I'd prefer Richmond, but then again, I live here and it is most convenient for me. Travelling would be somewhat difficult (though not necessarily impossible) due to family constraints. If it ends up being somewhere south of Richmond, then I could probably car-pool with Tracy and whoever else may want to join. Also, most of the amenities that Tim referenced in his above post are in Richmond, not so sure about other proposed meeting places. But I will work, as best I can, with whatever everyone chooses.

mwolf,

You were the one I was referencing, though there may be others. And if those are your lame excuses for not coming down, then I might as well skip, too, because I similarly qualify. :) And I'd volunteer my wife to help with your kids, but I'd like a house to go back home to (which I wouldn't have if I volunteered my wife to do anything else at the moment)... [lol]

I really don't care. My problem is I have to work that weekend so I can't make it. :-( Everybody is probably better off in Richmond. There really isn't much to do around here unless you fish.

Not surprisingly, I prefer Richmond area too. Whether it is actually IN Richmond or south of it nearer Hopewell isn't important. Either way though, I'm in.

Not at all.

After all, I'll likely be the biggest guy at the meet, but to have said so would have been, er, non-humble.

Tim [big smilie what can't get off the ground due to well, you know...]

TO ALL: Richmond is good, if that's what the group decides. I only ask that we keep the directions as simple as me.

Oh man, I just looked at the menu for The Tobacco Company restaurant in downtown Richmond. Expensive, but looks really good.

OK - it seems that most folks who are voting are voting for Richmond. (Personally, I just don't think the Triangle put enough money into their campaign.)

So, unless a backlash erupts in the next few days, I guess we are looking at

[red]Richmond on Saturday, November 5[/red]

For you locals, isn't there a brewery in Shockoe Bottom? I haven't been there in years, but I know I've been to one before. I'm sure that it's not as nice as The Tobacco Company as Chip suggested, but then maybe our entrees won't have nicotine and tar in them [wink]. Seriously, though, it would be much cheaper which means more money to spend on beer.

One last thing: I think that we need a name for this little get together. I suggest GeekFest '05. Whaddaya think?

In Richmond, there's breweries and other such all over Bottom... I'll try to get down through that area in the next couple of days to see what is there (I personally get down there very rarely, even though I work about a mile away) and report back with some options. I'll also look through the Richmond site and see what it lists. The one place that I do like to go is to Bottoms Up Pizza. It's got both indoor and outdoor areas and should be able to accommodate a group our size.

Actually, what is the size of our group?

Nonetheless, smoking should be ok there along with non-smoking (uh, that would be me). I believe there is also a bar there and plenty of other spots within walking distance. Nov 5 is only a week away, so we need to get moving with plans if we're going to...

If you need to reach me, my email is MrKuaizi at yahoo dot com. I usually check it at least once a day, so don't panic if there's no immediate response.

Ok, here's a link to Bottoms Up Pizza. Worst comes to worst, we can start here and move on if we choose to. There are also a couple of different breweries in Shockoe Slip (a little bit west of the Bottom) that is more in the business district. That is also where you can find the Omni Hotel. Both Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Slip have plenty in terms of nightlife, bars, etc. Or, plenty in terms of anything between Charlotte and DC. Actually, plenty may be relative, but nonetheless...

If we decide to do Bottoms Up to start with, then I'll need to make some reservations (because they fill up fast and without reservations we could be in for a heckuva wait). If you want Tobacco Company or Richbrau or any of the others, I may need to do the same, so better to let me know early so we can plan accordingly. For those that want to crash overnight, I'll try to get contact info for the Omni tomorrow when I'm at the office.

GeekFest '05 works for me.

Next year can be GeekFest '06 - the SQL.

Or, if we first see each other at four o'clock (think British), it could be Eye Tea. Ooh, that was bad.

ReBootCamp? Net Escape?

Um, not to worry anyone, but do we have any definitive plans in place? What time? Where? How many? These would be useful in order to at least make reservations (if necessary)...

For the Triangle residents, I'm willing to drive up on Saturday and back on Sunday. I live off Durant Rd. in North Raleigh near US-1, so it's already on the way. I have a Honda CR-V, so there's room for 3 additional average-sized people, plus it gets decent gas milage.

I don't want to publish my contact info in a public forum like this, but if you're interested in going along (non-smokers only, please), post a comment to me via one of my FAQs like the one below, and I'll reply with phone number & directions, etc. I won't be checking email on this account until tonight.
