Sorry, no Toys 'R Us in South Hill. We do have one of the largest Walmarts in VA. [surprise] You have to remember South Hill has only about 5,000 people.

In the coming years we plan on having a 10 acre marine sales yard, a Pro Bass shop, and a Home Depot. Can you guess what the largest attraction to South Hill is [ponder]?

The Walmart. Everyone going to Kerr Lake or Lake Gaston always end up there to get supplies as it is closer than the Walmart in Henderson.

Either that, or it's the jail. ;-)

(I used to live 15 miles south of South Hill in Norlina)

Not sure if "trendy" is a term I would apply to Shockoe Bottom, but then again, I didn't grow up here, so my idea of "trendy" may be somewhat different. I work near the Bottom and, on a weekend, parking should not be such an issue. There are also several nice hotels (Omni, etc) in the area if people don't want to drive back on Saturday night. I suspect there is a good variety of choices here in Richmond as well, but will leave that up to the group at large.

For me, if it's here in Richmond, then shouldn't be a problem for me to attend. Elsewhere would be up in the air, have to see what can be done. If it's elsewhere, I have a Jeep that can take 5 (more or less comfortably) if I'm able to make it.

Bottom's Up Pizza has been re-opened (for those familiar with Richmond, it was flooded, along with the rest of the Bottom, by Gaston last year) and everything else is going pretty good in the area. Depends on what everyone wants to do. (Am I pushing too hard for Richmond? Sorry...)

There's also an Applebee's and a Ruby Tuesday's (at least) in Colonial Heights/Southpark (about 25 miles south of Richmond). Lots of hotels in the area too. Might save worry about the Richmond traffic.

Nov. 5 is good for me, assuming my truck is out of the shop (might need that Prius lift after all!).

I have a knack for buying vehicles with unexpected defects.

Ford Dude: Mr. (H), your Mustang has the Bird Flu.

Chrysler Dude: Mr. (H), your Dakota has severe intestinal complications. You should have bought a Toyota - they generally only get gas.

For what it's worth, I wasn't planning to spend the night, but I can if the get toghether lasts that long (and I hope it does - I'm really excited about how many folks have responded).

For Richmond, I'd probably want to do an overnight (lots of deer on the roads this time of year).

Chopstik,
Forgive the mutiny, but this Private is arresting General Chopstik and ORDERING his appearance at the Higgins Ball. Attendance is mandatory (except for Dollie, if you know at I mean). Okay, that was a totally lame gender joke. Dollie, if I offended, I apologize. I suggest you slap Tracy, give Higgins a wedgie, and buy me a drink. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Tracy,
Upon your arrival, the group demands a full accounting of the entire "Food Lion / Charmin" incident. All we know thus far is what we read in the papers.

Can't wait to meet everyone. If you feel differently, er, be quiet. I can't seem to.

Tim [really big smilie!!!!!]

Tim, if you're not as punny in person as your are via TT I'm going to be very disappointed. Your puns have made my day more than a few times.

I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you!

FYI: My ex-wife says that the new Ruby Tuesday's in Hopewell should be open by then too.

I don't know if the attitude is "franchise-wide," but there's a Ruby Tuesdays in Raleigh that has provided a "party room" at a Raleigh location for the last 4-5 years for some of our extended family get-togethers. Is South Hill's franchise as accommodating (even for a small group)? Our family stuff involved up to 60 folks.

South Hill doesn't have a Ruby Tuesday, yet. They are just finishing AppleBee's. :-(

I've only been to the Ruby Tuesday's in Southpark once, and it was so crowded the two of us ate at the bar (this was about 10:30 PM on a weeknight).

The Ruby Tuesday's in Hopewell hasn't opened yet, so they have no "attitude" yet.

I'm not trying to push one location over the other anyway. Just mentioning options.

So the count is now:[tt]
TT Name Location
2ffat South Hill, VA
anotherhiggins Durham, NC
chiph Raleigh, NC
Chopstik Near Hopewell, VA
Dollie Raleigh, NC
griffindm In Maryland near DC
SilentAiche Raleigh, NC
tsdragon Hopewell, VA[/tt]

Again, if you are missing from this list, please let me know.

Most people seem to be on board with November 5 (that was way easier than I expected). If you can't make it, hopefully we will be able to organize another one in several months (unless we all hate each other).

Now, to the question of location:

The leading candidates seem to be
1) South Hill
2) Somewhere in the Richmond area.

First, are there any other nominations for location?

After we have all the candidates, I say we just vote on where it will be held.

Funny, but here in the Central Virginia area, we would say that I live in Richmond and tsdragon lives near Richmond, not the other way around... ;-)

I know of at least one other potential visitor who's up in Northern Virginia/DC area, but not sure if they'll be able to make it. But I don't think he'd go further south than Richmond if he does... He'll pop up in this thread if he wants to go, I suspect...

<jumping up and down without trying to create too big a scene> And I'll vote for Richmond, but I may be somewhat biased... </jumping up and down>

Do any of the Richmond (or South Hills) hotels have an appropriate restuarant space? It might be cool not to have to drive after the tech fest. Somebody mentioned Cracker Barrel, which I love (I once ate at Cracker Barrel six times in one weekend - no lie). But the place is too damn loud.

In South Hill, no, not really. Best Western has a Denny's but nobody else has a built-in restuarant. The reason is that most eating places (but maybe not the best) are within 1 mile of the motels.

Right now, Cracker Barrel is THE hot spot in town because it is also the newest.

Sorry, folks, but Cracker Barrel is out for me. Haven't been to one in about 10 years, and never will set foot in one again. Any other place is fine. I didn't realize that CB serves beer anyway. We were looking for a place that serves beer, weren't we?

In Shockoe Slip, the Omni has a restaurant/bar downstairs. It's right across the street from me, but don't ask how I happen to know these sorts of things... especially since I don't drink... ;-)

There are several hotels in the Slip and plenty of bars. The bottom is just a short walk away and plenty more in that area as well.

But I will add that if we want to move this to South Hill, I will submit to everyone's humble opinion(s) and endeavor to carry my lazy butt down there, as well... We're trying to make it convenient for all, not just me... Though it would be nice if everyone would start thinking just about me... Or, on second thought, maybe not... [lol]

Let me know if you need more info on Richmond and I'll see what I can dredge up for you... Until such time, I sit here humbly awaiting your requests...

Tracy, Tracy, Tracy,

Exactly how many stories do you intend to tell at [blue]US-South NC +/- TT Fest[/blue]? (we really need a shorter name...)

We've (Ok, I've) already demanded the "Food Lion / Charmin" story, and now you've got another one about Cracker Barrel.

HAH!

No offense, I just like saying "Hah."

Seriously, if our friends in the Richmond area suggest a meeting place, I have one suggestion - please make it simple. I need simple more than most folks.

E.G.: Going North on I-95, exit at the first stop light, Exit #000, and turn into the "&&&&&" at the first light.

Tim, for directions to Richmond, go north on I-95, exit after you cross the river, pay the toll, and find a parking spot after you pay the toll. Pretty simple, really...

That, or maybe you could find a teleporter... ;-)
