    HACMP and passwords

What happens if one node is out of the cluster when a user updates his or her password? Does syncing occur automatically when the node joins? Right now I ask all cluster users with access to a shell (only a couple hundred) to change their password on the node that I designated as primary. I...

    Requesting some thoughts on Devry

Experience almost always trumps a degree. I think it's the idea that one with practical experience knows more than one who has studied theoretical applications. Okay, that said, I still think that a degree is very important. It generally allows for a greater range of opportunities when...

    LinkedIn - Are there benefits?

Dollie, I'd like to point out that I have NEVER contacted you on LinkedIn. :) I've found that LinkedIn is useful for looking up old work buddies. I've found quite a few of my old military friends on it. It's good to get back in touch and connections certainly can't hurt you.

    nis ypslave error

Geez, I haven't managed NIS in years, so I'm a bit rusty. What happens when you type: ypcat ypservers I can't remember, does NIS require rpc services? Are these running on the slave?

    NIM location

I don't see a huge issue. The nim server doesn't need to be on the same physical subnet as the server it is performing maintenance on. Obviously you'll have potential firewall issues that you may or may not have to work out. I think the biggest potential issue would be network throughput (not...

How best to get ahead in the world

I think the key to getting ahead in any situation is having a long-term strategy and short-term goals. It comes down to your own flexible game plan. There are situations where manipulators succeed. It is difficult to argue this fact. We can all think of examples of this. People that work hard...

    Start a process automatically

Okay, just a bit off topic, but I thought it would go well with this specific thread... As Solaris 10 uses services/SMF instead of (or in association with more legacy) rc scripts, should admininstrators begin migrating to SMF? That said, I personally like the rc scripts. (Annihilannic's post...

    SunOS operating system...Please HELP!!

I think the Sparc2 chipset (SUN4M?) isn't compatible. That said, programs on SunOS 4.X may have binary compatibility with Solaris 10. I wouldn't bet on it though. If they depend on specific libraries... Well, it may be a challenge. You may have to recompile some code.

    How much am I worth??

Can we bring this back on track? I really enjoy reading different well-thought, respectful opinions on this site. I think that we may begin to digress further if we don't steer this conversion back towards its original topic.

Anyone else having trouble finding work?

As a MS Access programmer, you most likely have good knowledge concerning database architecture and/or theory. I see no reason why you couldn't add this to your list of skills on your resume. Employers are looking for what you have right now and what skills you can grow into. Emphasize your...

    STEP-BY-STEP CONF. SEND MAIL AIX5.3 TO MS-EXCHANGE

Exchange can be locked down so it only accepts mail from known mail servers or from a specific domain/IP address. Have you checked your exchange server security settings?

    Root disk duplication

I have to agree with the alternate disk install procedure. You can clone your rootvg to a standby disk and use this disk as a backup. I use something like this when I'm applying patches so I always have a disk that I can quickly boot off of if my patches uncover hidden "features". Yes, I have...

    SunOS operating system...Please HELP!!

Wow, it's been a long time. I used to hardware mirror my drives in those days and I can't remember if disksuite (Sun's logical volume management) goes back that far. A dump/restore may work to mirror the drive to another. You'll have to modify the /etc/fstab and install the bootblock...

updating to 5300-07 Service Pack 3

I agree with alt_disk_copy. You can update your system on the fly and "activate" your updated OS with a reboot. This also allows a simple back-out plan as all you need to do is reboot back to the original drives. This will only work, however, if your rootvg doesn't have active application...

VI: Out of memory saving lines for undo.

I find that vim works well. Identical to vi, but "improved". http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/p/os/aix/linux/toolbox/download.html

    HBA Powerpath query

This is a little tricky. As you're probably aware, luns are assigned on the EMC side of the house. The server discovers them through a "cfgmgr" and "powermt config" then creates powerpath devices (hdiskpower*) for any luns visible down multiple paths. If a lun is only discovered and/or...

    Getting LV size

I don't think it is possible to know that free size of a raw logical volume without going through the application/database that is accessing it. What do others think?

Anyone know of a good Unix training course?

I'm more of a fan of a Solaris x86 install on a test machine. It's closer to a true UNIX. I just feel that Linux teaches a lot, but automates many of the tougher pieces of administration. While this is handy, I don't think it is as good of a learning tool. I like a baptism through fire kind...

    HBA Powerpath query

Four adapters and all "Available"... Okay, do you know which ones have been zoned and have the luns assigned to them?
