In ESM if you right click on mailboxes under the mailbox store there is an option to "export list" It will give you the number of items and the size of each mailbox in a text file (basically what you see on the screen.) Limited report but better than nothing.

Have you checked the SMTP queues to see if there may are any malformed emails there? There could be a corrupted message there causing the issue.
