    also check HOW you downloaded the file. if you have used download managers such as stardownloader or getright, they split the files in order to download them faster and then reassemble them on your hd. this sometime causes problem when downloading software. i had the same problem you described...

    Try to open the document to an older version of word. Failing this I would try to convert the file to a different format like star office or ghost script (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/) and then open it. Another option would be to read the file as .txt, however i am not sure if that works...
