as an alternative to mail essentials, I recommend Omniquad MailWall [www.omniquad.com]
I use it as a seperate SMTP server, routing to and from my exchange server, and it works very well. it can add disclaimers and stuff, as well as virus scanning. if you don't have a spare system to run it on...
saving it on the desktop ?
depends if the size of your profile is an issue :-(

I had initial problems using BE8.5 on exchange 5.5 with "access denied" errors.
I resolved it by playing with accounts...try configuring your LAN admin a/c as your BE admin a/c
hope this helps a bit....

I have four win2k DC's, one of which runs exchange 5.5 without any problems. I think the issue is how many users/how hard you drive your systems. mine only has 30 users/mailboxes and win2k/exchange 5.5 deals with this very well (server in question is HP XU, 2xPPro200, 256Mb)
it doesn't run any...
I would suggest that this issue is to do with the IDE bus speed. I have a scsi 12x and that burns at full speed under 2k pro and server (and with clonecd works great).
if you ever needed an excuse to upgrade to scsi, this is it !

look at your existing collections, check the properties of your winXP workstation in SMS, the described operating system will (or should) show windows nt version 5.1
then I modified my existing nt 3.51 workstations collection query to show 5.1 instead of 3.51, renamed the collection then, hey...
shouldn't be any issues, I've tried it and it works ok...the account authentication is all that matters....

yes it can, I run it quite well, but you need to modify your collection queries to reflect NT 5.1 as your OS.
hope this helps,

I presume IP is all ok ?
try setting up the XP machine NOT on the domain and check that pings etc. all work that you can see the server in networks, then try re-adding the workstation.
any probs, let us know your IP config.....
hope this helps,

1 server, running win2k server, with active directory configured successfully.......
add the second server, also win2k server, then install active directory, adding it to the same forest etc...
hey presto, a second DC in your domain....

I use OmniQuad MailWall as an SMTP server to collect e-mails for our MS Exchange Server, but it can act as a standalone POP3 server, it can integrate with most Antivirus applications for scanning mail and stuff....
I also use Winroute Pro as a proxy server.
they are both easy to setup and use...
try using Omniquad MailWall as an SMTP server to route your e-mails....this can add disclaimers and stuff.
