I presume IP is all ok ?
try setting up the XP machine NOT on the domain and check that pings etc. all work that you can see the server in networks, then try re-adding the workstation.
any probs, let us know your IP config.....

Ip is fine. I can get into my E-mail and Internet Explorer as well as ping all of our servers.
I seem to have solved it though only time will tell if what I did really solved it.
I unticked the setting under the advanced tab in network properties - internet connection firewall
