hey all-
I have a sony cd burner and a sony dvd-rom in my machine and just can't get the cd burner to burn anywhere near its 16x speed. Does anyone have any tips for me on where to start troubleshooting this? I really don't have much experience, but am always willing to try things. The burner is internal. Can this be a software related issue? Are there any cd-burning freeware progs out there?

First of all, are you burning from CD to CD, or Hard Drive to CD?

I'm assuming that you're using either Roxio (formerly called Adaptec) or Nero software in Windows 2000. If so, go to the Help->About menu option inside the application to get the version number.

If both the DVD-ROM drive and CD-ROM drive are on the same IDE controller, then you're not going to be able to achieve the max transfer rate of 16x when going from CD to CD.

If you are using the newest version or Roxio CD Creator (5 I think) there is a place to set the max speed you want to use. This is separate from where you select the speed on the screen to actually burn the cd. Mine was stuck on 4x and I had to change a setting to allow it to burn at 8x.

Aloha,

James

just burning data to CD i have the problems...haven't even tried CD to CD...just assuming that would be a no go. I'm using Nero5518 (i'm almost positive...i'm at work and can't look)

it looks like you have a relitaily old motherboad not suporting faster transfer rates (UDMA100 and such) many users of cd-rws cannot use the top speed of there drive. you have best chance using nero although it takes longest. just use your burner at a lower speed, its only worth a minute or so.

Unfortunately that is not the answer. I'm running an Athlon that's less than a year old and running it on a Asus KT7A Raid motherboard with 512mg of ram, so i doubt that i'm not up to speed for the cd burner...it seems that something else must be the answer.

List of things to make a note of:

- Type of media (try at least 2 different CDR brands and make sure it is specified to handle up to 16x)

- Manually set the speed (before you burn, it should show you the speed you are about to burn at giving you the option to change it)

- Check Device Manager for any "flagged" items (such as yellow exclamation points on any devices)

What is the max speed that it's allowing you to burn at?
Also, give us as much info about your system including OS, IDE controller configuration, etc...

i have tried two types of media (although i'm not sure that the first type was 16x, but even the 16x would only burn at 4x). I'm going to go buy some new ones tonight to test them.

I usually let nero do a "test and burn" and it always adjust down to 4x (and rarely 6x). If i set it up, then i usually get failures.

I'll have to check the Device Manager when i get home, but if i remember right there were no warnings there.

I'm burning at 4x. I'm running Win2K pro. i don't know what my IDE config is (is there a way for me to check what it is...sorry, just don't know enough, but if you tell me how to check i'll do it)

Sorry, but I haven't used Nero much and never have in Win2K. Hopefully someone who has might know a little more about the conflict you're having.

It could be a software setting in Nero of some sort or perhaps a resource problem in Win2K. In either case, I hope you're able to discover the cause. Good Luck!

I've found that some media brands, particularly the "no-name" Taiwanese stuff at computer shows, cannot burn at the advertised speed. I've seen 12X media in a 10X drive fail above a 6x burn speed. But 16x to 4x seems excessive. Are you using Sony brand CDs? Or another good brand name? Try that. Also, close all other tasks except SysTray and Explorer with your Task Manager. I've found that having other programs open, such as Virus Scans and firewall software, can cause write problems.

I would suggest that this issue is to do with the IDE bus speed. I have a scsi 12x and that burns at full speed under 2k pro and server (and with clonecd works great).

if you ever needed an excuse to upgrade to scsi, this is it !
