I accidentally posted this in another forum so if you read it twice, sorry.

I am trying to publically serve a web from my w2k server. I am running a home network of two computers, no hub, no switch, just a crossover cat 5 cable. The w2k machine is acting as a gateway to the internet using winroute pro. I have enabled all incoming and outgoing tcp/ip ports in my firewall settings. I have the site serving and I can access it from both home computers, simply by typing in the IP address in my browser, it works great.

If I try to access it from any outside computer, like say my brothers house, it doesn't work. It just says connection not found. I am serving on my outside isp assigned ip address, so I'm baffled.

Anyone got any suggestions?

O.k. now I've noticed something, that might be pertinent information about my problem.

While sitting here next to the server machine I accessed my brothers computer via pcanywhere. From his computer I typed in the ip address of my server, Even though his browser never recognized a connection. I heard the processor on the server, act up as soon as I tried to connect to it. Furthermore, when I look at sent and received pakets for my outside network card, the rate of received packets increases much more rapidly while my brothers computer was still searching for the site.

That leads me to believe that he is contacting my computer, but for whatever reason it isn't giving him access to it, or anyone else for that matter

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I assume the following;

the win2k server can access the internet...
the workstation can access the internet...

- is winroute pro (which I use) configured to pass port 80 requests to the internal address ?
- is your IIS server configured ok ?

try using something like to give you a http address....

hope this helps.

Ok yes both of my computers on the home network can access the internet and no winroute is not mapping anyports to the internal computer.

The server is on gateway computer not the internal one,

I'm beginning to suspect that my ISP is blocking port 80 or re-routing it somewhere, or something.Because I manually changed the serving port from port 80 to port 81 last night. Now when I try to access the site, by typing the ip followed by the port number 81 it works!!! I'm not sure exactly what is going on. Is it ok to have it on this port or is there something I need to know.

I'm a little new to the networking aspect of all this. But I'm a fast learner so any advice would be helpful

Thanks I read the link you gave me. So is there anything wrong with leaving it on port 81 or what?

Thanks again

Nah, as long as you don't mind the workaround.

Unless your ISP is on a witchhunt to grab anybody running a webserver.....

I'll just write a little script that will redirect things to the proper port or something. I'll make it work.

Thanks for your help

Hey, if you figure out some workaround, post it; I'd love to know a workaround....

Good luck!

Ok I'll let you know what I come up with
