Turning WinXP into Kiosk Browser PC

I think you answered your own question. You need admin rights to install an application, so a user will not be able to install a different web browser. For the network, if you have a firewal, close all unnecessary ports. If you're just using it for the web, close everything except 80 and 443...

    Inverted org chart

I have a user that is trying to create an organization chart and show how a group reports to four people. Basically it's an invert of the standard org chart where the boss has 4 subordinates. Does anyone have any idea how to do this? The best thing I can figure is manually drawing the lines...

    Notification from Windows Backup

Thanks for the quick reply. The problem, as always, is the company not wanting to spend money for something we have for free right now, minus notification of course. I was hoping someone knew of a magical way to make XP/backup send out an e-mail on its own. But I'll definitely check this out...

    Notification from Windows Backup

Hi, We have no domain, amny sites with local workgroups and a main workstation. On these main workstations we use the Windows XP backup utility to run a daily backup of the user shares to an external hard drive. Too often users manage to unplug the hard drive, and checking each main...

    Deploying SP2 Via CD Unattended

I was having similar problems trying to disable many of the new features with little luck. I could not get it to run so it would use my unnattend file and apply my changes. I had to resort to sloppy batch scripts. But for what you want to do it's fairly easy. First, if you haven't already...

    Pre-configure pop-up blocker for SP2

I have been looking over this site, have tried doing an unattended install of the service pack only using the /passive switch, but it will not implement any of the changes I made in the unattend.txt. I am wondering what I am doing wrong, or if this is even possible to do. When we go to install...

    Pre-configure pop-up blocker for SP2

My company is preparing to install SP2 on all of our machines. Our plan is to do this via a CD at each location (many locations, slow connections, no active directory). I found out how to pre-configure the firewall by extracting and editing the netfw.inf file to turn the firewall off. What I...

Transfer recent contacts from OE to Outlook

Hi. We transferred a user from Outlook Express to Outlook. Moved their e-mails and address book fine, their address book only contained one address. But, there is a feature in the Outlooks to start typing and address in the To: field, and if you have typed it in before it will auto-complete...

    DHCP Nack

This question is actually on the Microsoft 70-216 exam that I just took. Here was the correct answer: "On both DHCP servers configure the scope so that it has both address ranges. Define an exclusion range for the entire address range 10.17.8.0/24 on Server A and for the entire address range...

Web pages will not come up after removing Netscape?

    PC Anywhere Connection thru Internet

Really need some more info for this. It sounds like your site is using private addresses behind a firewall. If that is the case, and you want to access this server from a location from outside of the network, say from home, then you would use the public IP address and have the firewall forward...

Easy way to add static route to all desktops

This is assuming you're using DHCP from a Win2k server. But in the scope options, add a static route there. It's option 033 Static Route Option. First enter the destination IP, then the gateway IP. Then of course the desktops need to renew their addresses. Jason

multiple printer sessions while using terminal services

If they have admin rights on the terminal server they will be able to see every printer in every session on that server.

    Restoring offline files

We were using offline files, but were having some issues so we turned it off. Now we are finding that any files that were changed while offline and not syncronized are now lost! I know that under WINNT/CSC the offline files are stored, but not in a conventional manner. Does anyone know of a...

    Access denied adding attachments

This just started happening to users yesterday. Using GroupWise 6 on Windows 2k. When a user attempts to add an attachment by hitting the Attach button in a new email, it first prompts them to insert a CD in drive D, when you cancel out of that and browse to the local file you want to attach...

    No Events

I've seen this happen once to one of our 2k servers. The event viewer looked blank, but you could still click on events there. It was as if they were invisible. What I did was save the log file, then clear events. After that, new events started popping back up.

Event ID 7031 - Services Error

Two things here. First, go to eventid.net, it's a great place to find info on anything in the event viewer. Second, we were getting the same error, applying the 823890 patch from Microsoft that everyone is talking about today should clear that up as well. Hope this helps you.

    Groupwise without Novell client

Actually we have tried that switch with no results. And I believe it looks to that port by default. Someone else has said it may have something to do with the Hit the Road feature. Even though we have never used it, it seems to think that it is setup? We are looking into it, but thatnks for...

    Groupwise without Novell client

Our network uses mainly Win2k servers, and one Novell 6 server for GroupWise. All of our clients run Win2k with the current Novell client. Previously, we used only Novell as out servers, so now that our users have no need to log into Novell except for email, we are removing the Novell clients...
