ManxMann,
We had an identical problem to you a while back. It took Nortel ages to find the fault as it was intermittent. However they eventually identified a problem with code pre 4.2.0.16 when using MLTs as per this release note :-
[Q00500160]—In some previous releases, a large stack that had...
I've had a similar problem to this with version 4.0. Are the servers on the same stack as the PC(s) affected or are they connected to another stack? If so do you connect the stack by a MLT?
AC.
It might be worth checking the Console port settings by telnet (Console/Comm Port Configuration) and check it has the same settings as the other units that do connect via console.

As you know the Baystack 450's 24 UTP ports can be 10Mbps or 100Mbps and half or full duplex. This gives flexibility on what you can connect to it. But in the case of the 400-2FX and most other fiber interfaces the bit rate is fixed (100Mbps for the 400-2FX) and only the duplex mode can be...
The Baystack 100 series hubs have 10BASE-FL ports and the 400-2FX has 100Base-FX ports. These are ports are not negotiable and so only work at 10Mbps or 100Mbps. They therefore cannot be connected together. Presumabably whatever you have connected at the end of these links are also 10Base-FL and...
What have you got connected at the end of your fiber link?
Have you checked the fiber patch lead is ok?
If you have the right connector try and loop the transmit and receive legs of the fiber patch lead together and the link light should come on.
A few further questions so i can understand your set-up better:-
Is the PC you are trying to ping the stack from connected directly to a port on the stack?
Is the PC in the management VLAN?
Are the 450-1SXs used as trunk ports back to a core router/switch?
Thanks for the advice guys. We now are looking at connecting the 3 power supplies to different power sources. This should stop us losing one of the 8600s next time it happens. Still concerned about the failure rate though - i'll do some more searching on Nortel's website.
Has anyone had any problems with the 8600 AC power supplies (8001PS) failing? We have had 2 (out of 20) fail in the last couple of months. Although we have three PSs in each chassis when it fails it trips out the power to the whole rack, so making a mockery of all the redundancy we have added...
The command 'Peer telnet' works on newer software versions on the 8690SF, so it might be the same on the 8190SM. It uses an internal loopback type of IP address to so this.
Also have you checked the little flick switch on the front of the card ( DCE / DTE settings). Make sure it's set the same...
Telnet to master card and then use 'peer telnet' command to telnet to standby card. You can now use 'rm' commands as you would on master card.
This doesn't work on older versions but i'm using v3.3 and it's fine.
Hope it helps.

RL,
Have you got spanning tree enabled on the Lanplex and/or Baystack 450 ports? Without it you will create a loop and so bring down the whole network. If you have, what is the spanning tree status of the connecting ports (i.e. forwarding, blocking, learning) ?

Not sure if you can do it on DM 5.5.2.0 but download 5.5.6.0. On this version you can change them from Device -> Properties. This is the first verson i've found which supports changing default community strings and about time too!!
That's good news. Can you let me know if it works - so i can retrieve my P4 from the store cupboard. Optivity 10 needs as much processing power and memory as it can get!!
I had the very same problem. I think it's an incompatibility with the P4 processors. I eventually used a P3 server and the Oracle installer starts no problem.
No mention of it on the Nortel website but i did find this:-
"EMEA PNB ] SHASTA: SCS Client will not work on Pentium 4 PCs until...
