Passport 8600 Power Supply

Has anyone had any problems with the 8600 AC power supplies (8001PS) failing? We have had 2 (out of 20) fail in the last couple of months. Although we have three PSs in each chassis when it fails it trips out the power to the whole rack, so making a mockery of all the redundancy we have added. These PSs are almost 3 years old - are they coming to the end of their life?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Not aware of any problems with these ageing, although the fact that it takes down the rest of the rack suggests a catastrophic failure of a component, probably a smoothing capacitor or rectifier, that has died of old age.

It might be worth looking on

What I would suggest (easy with hindsight) is that for proper redundancy I would put each of the 3 supplies in the passport on a separate power source, to protect against this.

Yep. If you are concerned enough about disaster recovery to have 3 power supplies (which all good corporations would), then you NEED to have them on different electrical sources. For all of our 17 8600's, we hook the first and second supplies up to UPS protected, but on different power strips, then we hook the third up to emergency power (generator). If you lose a power strip, still protected. Lose emergency power, still on UPS. Lose the UPS, still have emergency power

Thanks for the advice guys. We now are looking at connecting the 3 power supplies to different power sources. This should stop us losing one of the 8600s next time it happens. Still concerned about the failure rate though - i'll do some more searching on Nortel's website.

Yes. I have had two or three failures. Nortel has a new power supply that supposedly is more robust. Here are two in on of my 8600 for comparison:
