    Get yourself a working windows 98 boot disk, it'll have cd rom drivers. Check fdisk, and make sure you have good fat partitions. If you don't have a boot disk, you can make them from any windows 98 machine. Jeff

    CFM is cubic feet per minute. The higher the number, the better air flow it has. The dba, i forget, i think it stands for decibel something, but the higher the number, the louder it is. Jeff

    Do you have a program associated with it? If not, double click on any jpg, and when it asks you what you want this associated with, pick a program that'll open them, such as photoshop.

    Are you on a network? There's a patch for the shut-down on a network on microsoft's site. Here at the college we install that on all of our 98 machines. Jeff

    Here's what to do. Connect with your modem, open up a dos prompt, find an ip that you know is connected to the net, and ping it. See if you get a reply. If that doesn't work, try a new modem, take your old one back. Jeff

    Port 139... there are a few trojans that hit that port. Run a trojan scanner. Mirc sometimes uses port 139, but if you're not running that, check for a trojan.

    I actually have my boot sequence cd-rom, hard drive, and floppy drive. It makes no matter what order. If you're running a non-windows os like linux, or even the newest versions of windows, you can boot them right from the cd. Jeff

    Client for Microsoft Networks slow to appear

    Yes, anytime it takes a long time for the login to appear, it's looking for an ip. That's one of the ways we check here at the college to see if we're connected to the network/internet is with the computer starting up.

    How big is your network? Novell restricts logins and a bunch of other things. I actually like it a lot with a 2000/xp/98 for security and print sharing, and it has a file sharing setup in there also.
