An associate of mine purchased an hp with win xp pre-installed. This machine has the modem, nic and video integrated on the motherboard.

He needs to run win98 because of an application that runs poorly on anything but win98. After removing XP he installed win98SE. Windows will not install the modem, or nic and the video is funky. Also windows is only reporting a portion of his hard drive capacity. Is there something special that needs to be done to get windows 98 to recognize the integrated devices. Is this an HP problem?

Thank you

Did he install the drivers from the HP cd, or from the windows 98 cd? Also check the bios setting to make sure it's seeing the full hard drive capacity.

The HP web site may also have updated drivers for this machine, it they are supporting other OS's on that model.

I just had the same problem with one of my members and I had to make a dual boot when I was loading their XP.

the hp site WILL have the right drivers...based on the model # of the p.c. and like he said...check bios....run fdisk to make sure that the harddrive is partitioned properly.....any questions???

I had the problem with a Toshiba recently, ended up going to 2000 because they didn't support 98 as an OS on that machine. You might run up against the same type problem. Ed Fair

You obviously have nothing to lose by removing XP. By this, I mean files or programs that you might not want to part with.
Depending on the capacity of your HD, my approach would be to go the whole deal and format, partition, remove everything and start out clean.
MS recommends that you can run both win 98 and XP on the same machine. You do this by installing Win 98 first.
Look in MS search for more info regarding this subject.

Have you tried to run the program in Windows 98 mode by the Windows compatibility Wizard which is available in XP(Start->Programs and Accessories->Program Compatibility Wizard)?
If program is installed successfully you should be able to right click on the short cut and choose properties and you will see a compatibility tab where you can choose this.
