    Windows xp has a setting that will automatically shut the system off if it encounters a fatal error. if this is enabled and it is by default then this could be what is happening. From what I have seen most fatal errors seem to be caused by a video error.

    What permissions are set for your user profile? Do you have a firewall installed? The combination of your user profile plus the level of security set in IE can cause this problem. If you look at your IE properties and compare theirs I will bet that their security level is set higher than yours.
