Installing MS XP or 2000 with a new MSI KM2M Combo motherboard with new processor and new DDR RAM on a new hard drive the PC shuts off completely. This happens at exactly the same point with XP or 2000 when installation reaches the "Windows Starting" message.

I have tried different hard drive, RAM and CD-ROM. Still the same problem.

Could the power supply be the culprit? Other suggestions?

Thanks

Hello misquid -

It could be the power supply, but if your running 300w or higher you should be fine.

Many times, when it freezes at the same point each attempt, it's trying to access a hardware call -- which usually is associated with the video card or chipset. Do you have another video card you can try, or is it built on to the board?

Sorry I couldn't help further. Unfamilar with that type/style mobo.

Try and see if you can boot into safe mode. If you can get into safe mode then what is happening is that windows is shutting the system off when it encounters a fatal error. This is "normal" behavior for windows xp unless you turn this feature off. You should be able to do this in safe mode
