pst files. never dealt with them before.

What hasn't been mentioned is that the .pst makes a second instance of the message. This includes the attachment. If .pst files are to be used for "essential" mail, why do it at all? Just upgrade to more storage capacity and let the databases run wild. That is not a recommendation...

Is a replica PDC really necessary to restore a single mailbox ???

If I understand what you are asking, should this BDC be a PDC for the restore purposes? The answer would definitely be NO. As for the restore issue and starting services, you need to have the exact same structure when building a test bed like this. It should be off the network though.

Outlook files are kept on the local HDD, however, if you are asking where are the email files kept, that is different. If you are using an Exchange Server, the emails reside on the server unless you move them to a .pst file on the local HDD. There have been a few discussions about this before...

Scanned photos do not appear in word doc

By chance I remember how to do this, open Word, look under Tools | Options. Look at the View tab and then the section titled Show, uncheck the Picture Placeholders check box and see if that doesn't correct the problem.

    Backup 300MB/min but restores 1.6MB/min?!

I have seen the restore rates much slower when writing to a RAID 5 container than when backing up to tape. However not near that significant of a drop.

Problem with out of office assistant

cjordan is correct. There is a setting in the Exchange Admin program to allow such, and again, is correct in saying that Microsoft cautions the use of such replies. As an Admin, I would not allow replies to the outside world, and do not allow those at this time. You did ask for a remedy, that...

    Office Installation

The answer is in login locally not on the network. Did I misunderstand that you tried to upgrade to Office 2K from Office 97? I am not sure if the Terminal Services server setup makes any difference but I don't think so.
