e-machine celeron 633 - not sure about MB (NO INFO)
Win98 - NT4 Network -

Whenever we attempt to shutdown the PC it just reboots. The only way is to switch off at an appropriate moment.

I have tried a shutdown program (Timed Reboot) but that does the same.

No new software installed(xmt Timed reboot), however we have had the normal win98 shutdown probs with this pc that we have never managed to solve and lately as we are running Norton Utilities it locks up on completion of Speed disk.

I dont know if that points us anywhere in particular. Can find nothing about that particular point on Symantec site.

Anyone point me in any direction

Go into MSCONFIG and click the Advanced button. Make sure "Disable Fast Shutdown" is checked.

and get rid of Norton Utilities. It causes more problems than it solves.

I run Win98se in ATX case with similar prob. Used to shut down automatically but now stops at "It is now safe to turn your computer off" screen. Have tried all power options both in control panel and in BIOS with no luck. I think there is an adjustment I can make in the registry by changing "0" to "1" or visa versa.
Hope someone can help.

I have the same problem, but no Norton Utilities.
I discovered that a Firewire card caused this in my case.
If I remove the Firewire the system will power off, but with the card installed it just keeps rebooting when you shut down the PC.
I have tried 2 makes of Firewire card and both WinME and Win XP with the same results.

Cheers.

I had an Emachine running 98SE with the same problem. The only way was to pull the plug. After spending so much time researching about this problem, I brought a new machine. It might have something to do with the power supply.

If you are still having problems I have a Win shutdown file that will cure most of those problems. You will have to let me email it to you, if that is possible. Leave me your email and I will send.

Thanks all for your assistance.
I have managed to stop the constant reboot now. Just back to the myriad of standard shutdown problems.

For Spoonerland:
Would like to try that shutdown file if poss.

Problem will not be with the powere supply but probably with the version of PCI on the motherboard. I think I read somewhere that it require V2.2 minumum. A new motherboard would have fixed the problem.
