    Need help please-easy question Win98

Yeah, come to think of it, that usually helps with VIA chipsets - I didn't even consider that might be the problem. Thanks, enduser2k.

    Need help please-easy question Win98

I used the Abit K7E to replace a motherboard that had other problems, and it ran great. If you are going to use an ISA card in a new Abit board, you have to set up the BIOS to recognize an IRQ as belonging to the ISA device and not try to assign anything to it on its own. That should have...

    Mitec 5114VU Mobo Setup

    Here is a link to the manual online: http://www2.driverguide.com/files/uploads11/8719/5114VU%20manual.doc Taking this into account also I would guess at the following layout: (g=ground, +=positive signal) g19 +20 Reset BTN ?17 ?18 g15 +16 Power BTN g13 ?14 +11 ?12 Power LED x09 ?10 g07 ?08...

    Mitec 5114VU Mobo Setup

No, I don't, but I have dealt with several undocumented boards in the past. My guesses about how the pins are wired are based on the descriptions that you and wmsbrum have given as to what each of you seem to have gotten to work. I am sure that if I had access to this particular model to do...

    Mitec 5114VU Mobo Setup

I'm guessing pin 13 is ground as well as pin 7. I'm also guessing ping 11 is positive power LED, so either connection should function, although putting it in the wron direction may block the way for you to connect another nearby jumper.

    Need help please-easy question Win98

You could try disabling the USB controller in the BIOS and see if that conflict is the cause of the problem. It the games start woing with the sound card, then it was the conflict, otherwise it is something else.

    Need help please-easy question Win98

I have come across some hardware that Windows98 cannot adjust IRQs for... Just like in your case. The initial step I think your are referring to is to enable the PnP OS option in the BIOS like you said you already tried. Letting the IRQ for your USB controller change should not hurt anything...

    Need help please-easy question Win98

You might try setting IRQ 10 to ISA in the BIOS (basically removes it from the auto-allocation pool). This will sometimes shuffle around the IRQs, although I have never successfully resolved a problem this way - it was always some other issue. Most modern BIOSes support IRQ sharing, so perhaps...

    Raid compatability questions

I thought striping allowed for faster reads as well as writes. Perhaps slower seeks, but definitely faster sustained transfers. Mirroring (RAID 1) will protect against the drive failure problem described above, but it will decrease the speed as cdogg said. Raid 5 (3-Drive Parity) should allow...

    Win98 and long boot-up time

If the splash screen is disabled (It is controlled by MSDOS.SYS in Win98), you will see a flashing cursor instead of a splash screen. It is annoying because you don't get Billy boy's pretty blue progress slider at the bottom of the screen, so you get impatient sooner. It is not at all uncommon...

    Mitec 5114VU Mobo Setup

You may try the HDD light jumper backwards. You may also try orienting your jumpers differently like the power jumper above. They could be mostly just + to ground connections, so they might work to their neighbor's ground, hence improper pinouts being somewhat functional. If you can see the...

    I/O Conflict Ports: 2f8

You might also try adjusting the settings in the BIOS to make sure that it is set up to boot from the floppy drive. A port 2f8 conflict (COM2) would imply perhaps an old, jumpered, ISA modem that is set to use COM2. You can set it to use a different port or set it to use PnP or disable COM2 in...

Upgraded to Win98, Now Network Doesn't Work

Does the traffic light on your card flash when you send out a ping? If not, you may need to get new drivers for the card. Does the light on the router flash too? If not, you may need to check the cable & connections, and possibly try using one of the cabes from the other working workstations...

PC Restarts on its own ???

The VIA 4 in 1 drivers fix a lot of problems Windows has with VIA components. It also allows much faster DMA to the disk, so I would guess that is where your speed increase came from. What is really annoying is that you have to have Windows running stable enough to install the 4 in 1 drivers...

    question, what is udma 33?

Although it may be theoretically possible to run ATA/100 over 40 lead (lead, conductor, same thing) cable, I have never been able to accomplish it in an actual test. Perhaps if I were to separate all of the 40 leads so that there is more space between each or shorten the cable to 4 or 5 inces...

hysteresis...?? and other via hardware monitor questions

A thermocouple can also be used in the opposite manner: A current thru the device induces a flow of heat energy from one side to the other. This device is known as a Peltier Heat Junction. Some (crazy) people use these devices to cool their CPUs, forcing the heat to flow from the CPU into the...

    Unexpected Restart Problem Checklist

Some other points to consider: Windows 2000 by default does not blue-screen. Instead it immediately reboots, so if you are running Windows 2000, you might want to enable the blue screen and see if it is an OS problem as opposed to a power problem. Some virii cause a spontanious reboot, so you...

    question, what is udma 33?

Yes, a new mobo should come with cabling. Sorry cdogg, I have been dealing with processors for the last few days, so the term "Mhz" is kind of stuck in my brain. You are right, of course, it is MB/s. cdogg, you wanted a link; here it is: The white paper from Quantum on the ATA-100...

    Boot problem

If you need to reset the CMOS and don't have a jumper to do it, you can remove the battery and short across the battery holder's contacts to discharge the memory. (with power off, of course) It is beginning to sound like a defective motherboard. You might also try (if you have 2 or more memory...

    question, what is udma 33?

*sigh* Regular 40 lead IDE cables can be used on any IDE compatable drive, however if you use them on ATA 66 or higher drive/mobo combos, the combo will revert to the slower ATA 33 speed. If you use the newer 80 lead ATA cables (or the shielded round ATA cables) there will be less signal...
