    The latest Hack

Same thing applies, just get all the updates that are available, and subscribe to the Microsoft Security Bulletin http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/notify.asp Just make sure to remove the root.exe file so that the attack can't easily happen again.

launching a cgi script into IIS

Don't set the script executable permissions for the whole site, just the directories that the cgi scripts are in. Put the .exe files in a different folder, and all will be well. The other option is to put the .exe files in a zip file, but that is not really a solution just a work around. For...

    The latest Hack

Look for root.exe in your scripts folder. It is the program that they used to upload the files and put them in the directories. If you don't delete that they could gain access back into your system even if you patch it. Delete that and delete all the index.htm, default.htm, index.asp, and...

    New to SQL Server

Thank you, I changed it to accept both NT or SQL server authentication, and I was able to connect.

    New to SQL Server

New to SQL Server (Moved from mySQL) and I'm having trouble connecting to a database from an ASP page. I'm getting the error: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. I really don't know where to go from there. Ant help or tutorial links would be great.

launching a cgi script into IIS

InternetOverlord is correct. It is not an issue of permissions, but the fact that that directory is not allowed, by default, to run executables. Switch this feature on with the first tab that comes up when you view the properties of your site in Internet Services Manager.

IIS5 cannot display home page if SHTML

I was unable to duplicate your problem. I added a .shtml page to my web directory and set it as the home page, and the page worked fine. (IIS 5, Windows 2000) It sounds like a possible permissions issue from what you're saying. Check to make sure that the directory has permissions for...

    cgi-bin

You also need to make sure that you give permissions to that directory to run "Scripts and executables". Just right click on the directory in IIS, and you should see a drop down box with that as an option.

    http://subdomain.domain.com

IIS 5 can easily build and direct subdomain sites. It even comes with a wizard. IIS 4 does not have this feature, and it would need to be processed by a 3rd party DNS service.

    SUBSTRING or SUBSTR in Access

Is there any way to extract a substring from an Access 2000 DB? I have used a query such as "SELECT SUBSTRING (content,1,250) from articles" using mySQL to grap the first 250 characters from a column. This query does not seem to work with Access. Any input or a way to do the same thing?

Ftp pointing to default web site.

First step is you have to make sure that your main DNS server (most likely ISP) has an entry pointing ftp.domain.com to your ip adress. The stardard configuration of IIS 5.0 will automatically steer that address to ftp://domain.com.

Intranet and Internet sites on the same server

Go into IIS manager. Go to the security properties of your intranet site. Go to ip addresses and domain name restrictions. Change the radio button to denied access, then click on add. Switch to group of computers. Enter the ip address of your dhcp server in the network id box, and the...

No ASP while offline (IIS 5 Windows 2000)

Yes that is an interesting problem. I have solved it by connecting the web server computer to a hub, thus creating a network connection. Obviously this is not a fix, but it works.

Intranet and Internet sites on the same server

Another step you could take, and one that could eliminate your need for having a password login would be to restrict the site by ip address. You can specify just the addresses in your office lan and block all others. This is just as good of security, as far as I know as password protecting a...

What permissions to access an ftp site with read/write?

Thanks I'll give that a shot. It does seem silly to have to have a Admin level account to be able to upload files to an ftp.

What permissions to access an ftp site with read/write?

I want to limit access to an ftp site Win2000/IIS to one user. However I am not able to log on to the ftp with the user name I assigned. It was just given regular user permissions. I don't want to give unnecessary permissions to this account, just what is necessary to read/write files in this...
