For your scanner... I have the same scanner, but I use a different software to scan pictures. When you open the items you scan, are the lines still there, or is it only when you view with the astra scanning software? Second, there's a shutdown bug in 98, and I do believe there is a patch on...
Get yourself a working windows 98 boot disk, it'll have cd rom drivers. Check fdisk, and make sure you have good fat partitions. If you don't have a boot disk, you can make them from any windows 98 machine.

CFM is cubic feet per minute. The higher the number, the better air flow it has. The dba, i forget, i think it stands for decibel something, but the higher the number, the louder it is.

Do you have a program associated with it? If not, double click on any jpg, and when it asks you what you want this associated with, pick a program that'll open them, such as photoshop.
Right after the pc detects your hard drive and detects where your operating system is, hit f8, and a box will come up asking if you want to go in through safe mode, step by step, normal, etc. You'll want command prompt only.
If you need to edit that file, type in a dos box edit config.sys and a...
Try uninstalling windows media player, and downloading it from Microsoft's website. Also check and see if the avi doesn't have a DIVX codec, in that case, you need the right codec and/or a divx player.

Did he install the drivers from the HP cd, or from the windows 98 cd? Also check the bios setting to make sure it's seeing the full hard drive capacity.
Are you on a network? There's a patch for the shut-down on a network on microsoft's site. Here at the college we install that on all of our 98 machines.

Here's what to do. Connect with your modem, open up a dos prompt, find an ip that you know is connected to the net, and ping it. See if you get a reply. If that doesn't work, try a new modem, take your old one back.

Port 139... there are a few trojans that hit that port. Run a trojan scanner. Mirc sometimes uses port 139, but if you're not running that, check for a trojan.
I actually have my boot sequence cd-rom, hard drive, and floppy drive. It makes no matter what order. If you're running a non-windows os like linux, or even the newest versions of windows, you can boot them right from the cd.

Hi Kelly,
Once again I have tried to do this, with no luck at all. Would I be able to send you a database with just the pertinent things so you can see where I'm making my mistakes? Both things you mentioned above still give me #Name? and when I try to type something in them, it tells me...
Yes, anytime it takes a long time for the login to appear, it's looking for an ip. That's one of the ways we check here at the college to see if we're connected to the network/internet is with the computer starting up.
I had that problem trying to install a few certain programs with my 98 machine, one program in particular was Padus diskjuggler, it would give me that error message when I tried to install. Turns out I had a virus that made a boo-boo in that file, as well as explorer.exe and some others. Check...
How big is your network? Novell restricts logins and a bunch of other things. I actually like it a lot with a 2000/xp/98 for security and print sharing, and it has a file sharing setup in there also.
