To do so click Start/Programs/MS-DOS prompt.
In the MSDOS prompt window type
attrib -r -s -h C:\MSDOS.SYS
then press Enter.
This is to allow you to edit/write to the file as otherwise it is Read-Only. Then type
notepad C:\MSDOS.SYS
then press Enter.
Notepad will now load with your...
If you get windows back up and running because of what mhughes suggested then try to check up on your Windows Files...
There is a system file checker that comes with Windows...
First go to Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tools
Select: System Information
Select: Tools
Select: System File...
Try this...
When it asks to restart... say no
Then let it exit the installation program.
Select: Start>Shutdown>Restart
Before you click okay, make sure you hold down the SHIFT key and don't let go... not click okay... make sure to keep pressing the SHIFT Key... See if it restarts windows...
First Check the obvious...
-HD Space
-Are any other programs running ie. Virus Software
Try this before installing:
This makes sure that nothing is running during the installation...
Select: Start>Shutdown -- DO NOT SELECT "OKAY" --
Select: Ctrl+Alt+Del
When the pop-up menu comes...
There is a system file checker that comes with Windows...

Select: System Information
Select: Tools
Select: System File Checker
Select: Settings
Make sure you check the boxes at the bottom
-Check for changed Files
-Check for deleted Files

I agree with Alt255... It is similar to just cutting the power off while your hard drive is on... you might get a few bad sectors every now and then due to the constant powering up and down...
I also read somewhere where it is good just to forget that the energy saving tool is there...
Check out www.regedit.com they have your hack and waaay many more that will surprise you... You'll need a bin/hex editor first and then change the explorer.exe file... check it out...
