upgrading from 256mb there will be a speed increase. you should be using 512mb min with win XP. i have 512mb myself and i use about 180mb of this just browsing internet. getting a cache program to free up memory is a good idea also.

check that plug and play is turned on in bios. to install it manually use add hardware in control panel.

as previous person said where are you connecting head phones to?
check the onboard sound software configuratins to see it the volume is not turned downed. mistakes happen, check you are plugging it in the right socket.

you say old laptop, what spec? because it could be that the external drive could be usb v2 and your laptop being only able to support usb v1

check in system hardware device to see if its setup in there and also it should be in the control panel where you can configure it.
well i have had experience with bluetooth usb which is similar. it sets it self to a com port, so i am assuming that the usb ir would do the same.

well just found out what rain is. its a pc cooling software right? well for a AMD K2-6 550 i don't think you need this. more program you have on startup the more resources they use. its probably checking status every few seconds. disable it as i said before and see what happens.

could rain be a virus or spyware? unless you know what it is. done a search and can not find any info on this. go into msconfig and disable it and reboot to see what happens.

make sure the power plug for p4 is plug in. its square with four holes. clear bios with jumper as well. make sure floppy cable is plug in correctly also.

do you get post boot on screen? if yes then it could be windows errors. if you dont get post boot then it could be the graphics card. check that all cables are plugged in properly.
quick test - try monitor on another pc it possible and try another monitor on this pc also.
