Dell uses CS jumper on all of its drives. The end of the cable is the primary and middle is secondary.
You need to go into bios and set the optical drive as first boot device.
The optical on the end of the cable is your xp boot drive.
If you are going to boot from the 160, it must replace the...
Search for a program called regclean 4.1. This program came from MS but you can no longer get it from them. You load the files on a floppy and run that.
If your dell is black and gray, the gray part flips up and there is a port under there as well as on the back. There is a Dell forum on dell.com that may shed more info
Have you tried
Insert Windows XP CD into CD-Rom
Click Start > Click Run > and type
D:\I386\WINNT32 /unattend
And click OK and follow installation steps.
I assume you are doing this without a network cable. I'd remove or disable the nic because that is a big count towards the magic windows number. Also remove as many no longer needed hardware
This may be the slowness of your phone system. did you try putting "," after the 1? you mat need more than 1. The comma is a pause for modems to get dial tone.
What software is the server running? And what is your role. The new "machine" needs to be put in the same machine group as the old one. On a windows server, this would be in the AD.
Can you log in as another user? You may have to edit policy first. Let windows find all the hardware changes. After that has been done, do the activation. I believe it's still 30 days to activate.
You could try manually re entering the info copied from another pc.
A simple fix may be to delete the root hub and then have XP discover it.
Most usb printer ports are not editable so I am not sure how you would do that.
I would think either your cable or nic is bad as far as hardware goes.
More likely your networking protocols are messed up. I'd delete everything including the nic and restart.
I am assuming that the printer is being connected directly to the computer. You uninstall the printer, not the port. Does the printer manual tell you to install the software first and then the printer or to plug in the printer and then install the drivers.
To test the computers usb ability...
You should uninstall it and any copies and unplug the usb cable. Then with the computer running and printer on, plug in the cable and let XP find it. I've found that if I install a printer driver, then add the printer, I get multiple installs.
You can add the port but I only do it for remote...
I read the manual and you found the cache part but under vga, you can select agp or pci, make sure it is on the correct one and not auto.
You may want to try swapping power supplies. The intel may not not boot due to the power drain of the splitter so a higher power supply might resolve your issue
Could be the cable modem. I had one that kept giving me fits. Changed the modem and everything fine. Since I had more than 1 pc connected, it made it easier. Have you tried another pc?
Thanks Kingmob. I did my updates and then did a audio hardware update through windows update. My sound was lost. Not until I removed the device and reinstall, did it start working again. I also gained an outlook icon on my desktop that I did not have there before
I never seen a mb that did not have a cache for video or irq 9 for vga that I can remember. They are on different pages so look around. Compare those setting against the working one, match if they are different, disable anyways just to try if they are the same. Lastly, unistall the video card...
