You don't say which version of SQL Server Express you have but for 2005 network protocols for remote connections are disabled by default. It may be for later version it was similar.

It's not really an answer to your question as I don't know why it happens but have found it a little annoying to have been disconnected from a session where I was working. So after connecting to a new session determine the session number of the disconnected session (from task manager maybe)...

Actually if you do have just Exchange 2003 then the default settings will not be "in pretty good shape". That's why the link I mentioned was created in the first place and has proved so helpful in the past.

Firstly I would recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Fireware (10.2.12 from memory).
The ports(s) that you will have to forward will depend on the type of mobile devices you are dealing with. For example with Windows Mobile it will be HTTPS.
