It all depends upon how you define "securely enable."
If you use the commands you suggest then you will enable SNMPv1. That's OK as long as no one is able to capture and see your SNMP packets. SNMPv1 sends everthing in clear text including the community string (password).
If you want...
What you want is contained in the HOST mibs. The SNMP agent for those mibs will be OS dependent in addition to system model and manufacturer dependent.
If the systems are current and are still under support contract, call your mfg support and tell them you want to access the HOST mib info for...
Check out MRTG (http://mrtg.org)
It is "free" except the amount of work you have to do to configure it and get it running. There is no GUI. You edit config files with a text editor. Getting it going is not easy but not that complicated. The cfgmaker utility helps get one started.
Try it...
For long term utilization tracking, and if the switch is SNMP-aware, use MRTG (www.mrtg.org).

If truth were not absolute, how could there be justice?
To upgrade from FC2 to FC3, just run the install of FC3. It will detect the previous version and switch to update mode. It even updates the yum config to go to the FC3 repositories.
As always, an insurance-backup never hurts.
My question...
Does anyone know of a way to download all the...
You need to ask these questions of your controller card vendor. They know the capabilities of their main agent.

Thanks!
I guess it's learn rsync time.
We already are running a Veritas BackupEXEC solution for our 200+ Windows servers. Unfortunately, the (old) version of BackupEXEC we have doesn't support RHEL 3; they want to sell us NetBackup for that. So they are looking at all the enterprise options...
I'm needing the wisdom of the net.
I have a small shop of 5 RHEL 3.0 systems that I need to set up for backups.
I need something temporary because the department is evaluating CA BrightStor, Veritas NetBackup, IBM Tivoli, and CommVault for an enterprise-wide solution to be implimented next...
A good deal of reference documentation is available on CCO (login required) http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/browse/psp_view.pl?p=Technologies:VLANs_and_VTP&viewall=true
Enjoy!

Paul,
A ver useful Windows command I use frequently is the "nbtstat -A [IP address]" command. It will query the IP and if it is a Microsoft OS, it will tell you the machine name and user ID of whoever is logged in. I've found this very helpful.

Being able to program in perl is a very valuable skill. You will find it very rewarding to be able to whip out a small script when you need to.
Another handy tool is expect. We manage the configurations of ~150 Cisco routers mainly with expect scripts. [CiscoWorks? We don't need no stinking...
Andy,
I did a search on CCO for "Hierarchal Campus Design" and got 0 hits.
A search for "Campus Design Documents" came up with 210 links but was mainly focused on design and not documenting.
Do you have some specific links?

For a not-too-expensive commercial product check out Ipswitch's new WhatsUp Pro (http://www.ipswitch.com). We are using the old version called WhatsUp Gold and are going to upgrade as soon as we have the resouces/time.
It provides a lot of bang for not many bucks.

If you are going the tftp server route, there is a very hand Perl script to automate it.
It's call scarfconf.pl and it is part of the MRTG (http://www.mrtg.org) distribution. It is under contrib/cisco_tftp. You specify the IP of the Cisco router, it's community string, the IP of your tftp...
BTW,
In IOS, I find it useful to type the command:
term length 0
before I start my capture and do the show run. This turns off the pagination for this terminal session. Then there is no editing needed of the captured file.
With the PIX, YMMV.

How about the low tech method of watching the lights on your switches? It's cheap, easy, and pretty reliable. If you have one or two heavy-hitters their lights will be more consistently on than others.
Assuming you have switches that speak SNMP, you could use MRTG (www.mrtg.org) and get the Top...
Also,
make sure that whereever you connect the hub, that the other end is half-duplex. If it goes into full duplex mode talking to a hub (by nature, a half-duplex device), the collisions WILL seriously slow you down.
Also, make sure you actually have a HUB. A lot of devices on the store...
Antelope,
RRDTOOL isn't a process it is a tool. It is run by other scripts as they need it's services.
Search the rrdtool-users mailing list (http://www.ee.ethz.ch/~slist/rrd-users/) or the MRTG mailing list (http://www.ee.ethz.ch/~slist/mrtg/). There is a wealth of knowledge there.

try:
conf t
int range fa0/1 - 48
no snmp trap link-status
end
I love the "int range" command I recently discovered. It saves a WHOLE LOT of typing :-).
