what modifier are you applying?

apply a material and check the box in the mateditor that says "2 sided" then apply the material. This isn't the best solution...you really should take the time to flip the normals into the right direction. you can do that in the mesh editing mod.

don't import text or hatching...also clean up the ACAD dwg as much as you can to get ride of the "not neccessary crap"

Are you on Windows 2000 with SP4? If so do a search on the MS knowledge base for this problem with max files and it will give you a solution.

you need to press F1 and do a search for "backgrounds" and learn about this feature...this is really basic stuff that is in tutorials included with 3ds max documentation.

you can put a texture on each side of a "one sided" object. just use the top and bottom map. This is how things like leaves are done.

You can map the jpg to a plane and then use it to help you model. Some people you say 3 different views of an object (top, side, front) make the corresponding planes and use them for reference while modeling.
