Mike,
I do not own one of these boards but took a look at their specs and there is support for 4 x Serial ATA2 devices and surprizingly, 4 x Serial ATA connectors.
The normal practice is to locate the mobo connector (try looking at where the current one is connected) and this is most likely to...
Due to the high theft rate of laptops this is a scheme that makers have used to prevent easy re-entry.
Normally, producing the correct documentation that matches registration records at an authorized service center is all that is required. I am not familiar with having to ship it.

Try deleting the msg's around this and it also. If you don't want to lose them forward to some account first then delete and try again. See if it is a msg causing the glitch

If you can see the msg's that have downloaded, they are normally by date/time. Can you determine the last next to last or anything close to last? check date/time stamp.

Just a reality check:
Has this NIC ever been used in this PC?
Is it onboard?
If so, is it enabled in the BIOS?

XP has a default of 10 users allowed in a workgroup. Above this MS wants you to use their server technology.

Look at all the foregoing advice...
Determine the drives interface, as stated if SATA you will need a SATA capable mobo or card. If mobo, enable in the bios, and obtain the SATA drivers for your OS to be able to recognize the drive. Same for a card snas the BIOS setting
If and IDE drive also...
Question 1 - Margins
Question 2 - USB 2.0 at 400KB/s is 4 to 8 times the rate of a HD. USB is not the bottleneck here.

Grab the drive mfg's utils or your fav diag suite and run on this drive...see what they tell you about the health. May very well be on its way out. You might try the freezing thing; drive in a plastic zip bag in the freezer then directly to the PC and boot and transfer any thing you can...
I am not familiar with the intel chipset but it should be similar to the NVidia NForce as far as function.
You might have a CD or can download the tools for the RAID controller/arrays. There is a separate BIOS for the controller usually accessible during boot up with a prompt to press?? to...
This ATI 'unified' driver thing sounds very similar to the NVidia driver suite; One driver release for all cards and also has problems with some older cards.
Glad that you traced it. Was going to recommend something along this line, but knowing the advice you have given and that you stated...
Don't ya just love the win update thing...
Can ya try either a lat known config before you hot patched, or remove(uninstall) the win fixes back to certian date?
We all know that some can be removed while others are not removeable after they are installed.

...this when playing DVD's a couple of years ago....almost ended up being thrown off the Deck!! As I recall, this was a software sync-ing problem (*read that as driver), but took me way too long to solve trying to get all drivers talking the same stuff to each other, at least at the same time...
Well you did not state what you have....So I guess the best advice is to check the mfg site for your mdl spec's.
BTW: I am not aware of what you have heard

First for XP to support 2 CPU's SP2 is required.
Win often installs specific support for dual CPU's when installing Win server xx. We always imaged a dual install setup as this will also function on a single so that when & if a second was added a re-install would not be necessary.
I would...

Way too little information...Normally the only detriment is that you will only tranfer at the lowest denominator.
I will assume that you have checked that the CPU is of the same type i.e. Intel 775 pin or AMD 939 pin. Beyond that check the mobo site for CPU compatibility.
