Network Controller Issue

I'm trying to set up a Dell Inspiron 600m with Win XP Pro. I have an unresolved issue with the network controller, with the Device Mgr. giving a Code 1, Device is not configured correctly, error. I have downloaded every conceivable network controller driver from Dell's site without any success.
The NIC is a Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated card. It has no issues.
What am I missing here?

Just a reality check:

Has this NIC ever been used in this PC?

Is it onboard?

If so, is it enabled in the BIOS?

Actually, I have solved the mystery. Just on a fluke, I downloaded drivers for a wireless card. See, I never knew whether it had one or not since the OS was corrupted.
It did, the drivers worked and the network controller issue was because of the missing wireless adapter.
