Both words appear to mean the same thing...a repeated occurrence. Are there certain instances when it is more appropriate to use one over the other?

My immediate impression was that 'reoccurrence' is just plain incorrect. I'm not sure if I've ever heard it before.

At best, it seems to be a somewhat rare word:

Onelook.com lists only 3 dictionaries containing 'reoccurrence', but 31 for 'recurrence'.

And just to gauge usage, I googled each. About 370,000 hits for 'reoccurrence', About 11,300,000 hits for 'recurrence'.

Now that I know the word exists, I'll continue not using 'reoccurrence', instead choosing 'recurrence'.

I would never use "reoccurrence".
I also never use "orientate".

I agree Reoccurrence is very rare, it is not in my spell check dictionary. I always use recurrence.

Is it possible that 'reoccurrence' is what happens if you pass it through the syllable elongation/insertion filter discussed at length in the 'Texisms' thread, and then just write down the result phonetically?

The way I always thought it is should be used is:

If an event happens the first time, it is an occurrence.
If it happens again a second time, it has reoccurred and is a reoccurrence.
If it happens more than that, it is a recurring event and each single event is a recurrence.

I use recurrence and never use reoccurence (in fact, Google Toolbar spell checker wants to change reoccurence to recurrence).
