In the vein of the Southern USA Get Together and the fabled UK Beery MeetsTM, who would be up for getting together in or around NC? We could include VA members, and even DC, SC and GA members if they don’t mind driving a bit.

Let’s start off by getting a head count of who is interested and where you’re located. Then we can start throwing out some possible dates.

I’ll start: I am in eastern Durham off I 40 at Exit 274 (near South Point), and yes, I'd love to get together with some Tek-Tip types.

BTW - if anyone wants to have an RTP-specific get-together sooner than this large-scale one can be organized, send me an e-mail at my TT username at hotmail dot com.

Sounds like a great idea to me! I'm in Hopewell, VA, about 20 miles south of Richmond.

I'd like to, too. I just hope that gas prices go down so I can.

Odd things about South Hill. We go North to South Park Mall (Petersburg/Colonial Heights) and South to Northgate Mall (Durham). ;-)

I'm in, John - thanks for organizing it. Can we make it a few weeks out (to increase everyone's availability)??

I hope we hear from one of our SC breathren, although I can't locate him right now. I think he was a railroad-guy.

I'd also likely be interested... I'm near tsdragon, southern part of Richmond. Schedule is usually pretty tight, but can play it by ear... Thanks for putting this together, anotherhiggins!

2ffat: If gas is a problem maybe those of us in southern VA can vanpool. I'll likely be going right through your area on the way. I just bought a used minivan that will seat at least six people.

BTW: Southpark Mall is just a few miles down the road from me. Hopewell is the third of the "Tri-Cities". You already mentioned the other two.

Let me know! I'm in North Raleigh, so I'm quite close to you, John. I'd love to get to meet everyone!

Cool!

ALL!,

Y'all, this is WAY too cool. When it started, I confess that I thought it might be just Higgins and TSDragon and me, depending on some arbitrary thing or another.

but add Chopstik and Dollie and Mr. 2ffat?? It just has to be!!!

I'm in MD by DC. That might be a little far to make it, but I'll keep an eye on the thread to see what develops.

Dave,

I'm a North Carolina kid from way, way back.

I've driven to friends' weddings in Dover, DE, and Nashua, NH.

I've driven to Baltimore, MD, to give a PowerPoint presentation on "residencey fraud." Cool trips, each.

You can drive a bit south to meet the Teksters...

In all seriousness, whatever gets set up, I truly hope you can make it.

Whaddaya say we leave this open for the weekend, then on Monday we can start throwing around some dates?

My additional two cents worth, although I'll need financing:

This terrific endeavor that John has set up involves a number of us folks in or near Raleigh.

My thought is this - the others shouldn't be the only ones who have to travel. Anyone know a middle-place? I regret that it's unlikely (anyone know a hotspot in Henderson??)

However, I'll drive wherever if need be. My thanks to all who want to meet.

Let's see in Henderson, there's Chik-Filet ;-) North of Henderson (in Middleburg) is a great steak place. I'm not the one to ask for hotspots, though. My life consists of Work, Family, Work, Church, Work, Sleep, Work, Eat, and Work. Unless it's on one of those contexts, I ignorant of it. [lol]

Well, if we're looking for hotspots, Henderson just isn't it, unless we meet at the Silo. Decent steaks and ribs, decent bar(!). Middleburg has a good steakhouse, but that's about all. Not sure it'd be good as a meeting spot, but at least I know where it is.

Further north is Norlina (which we'll just skip over unless someone wants to actually locate it and go to Mitzi's for some good country cookin'), then South Hill. There aren't a ton of restaurants in South Hill other than fast food, but there's always Denny's.

What kind of "spot" are we looking for? I'm up for just about anything, but if it's got beer..........

[cheers]

Looks like we might need to do this on a weekend instead of during the week? If that's the case, I'm not available the last week of this month. Please don't plan it around me, however. This won't be the first and only time we meet, I hope!

Well, in South Hill, there is Los Cocos, Eastern Buffet, Kahill's, Cracker Barrel, Brian's, Arnold's Diner, Wagon Wheel, and soon to be AppleBee's. Each has it's own cusine and ambiance. Unfortunately, HorseShoe closed. What's important about HorseShoe? It's where Machinegun Kelly was caught in the 30's. :)

Is it just me, or, for someone with 'Silent' in his name does this guy never shut up? [thumbsup2]

Just kidding, Tim.

I agree wholeheartedly. There is no reason why we can't pick a central location that only requires a couple-of-hours drive for everyone involved. That way no one should have to pay for a hotel (unless we get carried away with the libations). And we could have one carpool come from the south and another from the north to further cut down on gas money. I drive an '03 Prius and would be happy to drive. It will fit three Trianglites Trianglonians folks from the Triangle just fine for a short road trip, as long as one of you is less than 6' tall.

Everyone: have a look at the following list and let me know if you're missing.

[tt]TT Name Location
tsdragon Hopewell, VA, about 20 miles south of Richmond
2ffat South Hill, VA
SilentAiche Raleigh, NC
Chopstik Near Hopewell, VA
Dollie Raleigh, NC

me Durham, NC[/tt]

If we take griffindm as the northernmost, then the halfway point would probably be somewhere around the Richmond area. Not that I'm trying to get out of driving, just pointing that out.

I'll second Richmond. ;-) And I'll freely admit that I am trying to get out of driving... It's hard to do much travelling when I am watching the 5-yr old and the wife is between work and school herself...

Of course, I might also add that there is slightly more to do here in Richmond, as well, so that may also factor into it...
