I remember years back when a coworker bought himself one of those daily tear-off desk calendars. This particular calendar had misinterpreted song lyrics for each day of the year. Here's one from the calendar..."Kiss this guy" instead of "Kiss the sky" by Jimi Hendrix.

I'm a big time Jewel fan. While at one of her concerts, while she was singing "Serve The Ego" one of my friends was signing along and seriously thought the song was "Save the Eagles."

This one is from an episode of "Friends." Phoebe was talking about a song that Elton John sang for "...that guy from Who's the Boss." She then started to sing..."Hold me close young Tony Danza." ("Tiny Dancer")

Can anyone think of other misinterpreted song lyrics?

Pity the insomniac dyslexic agnostic. He stays up all night, wondering if there really is a dog.

At a young age I never could figure out why they let that one song about "My sha-ro-na" on the air... I never have figured out what the song actually says, but I always thought it was about a part of the male anatomy.

Sharona was the name of a woman about whom the song was written. I remember seeing something (on VH1 maybe?) where they talked to the band and the actual Sharona. A very uninteresting story if I remember correctly.

I was sitting next to a guy at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert demanding a "Free Burn" encore :)

[thumbsup2] Wow, I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time.
I think I've forgotten this before.

Who could possibly forget R Dean Taylor's classic 'In The Animal Sea'. As heard by a friend of mine.

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Have you ever tried to slip out of a party and your spouse just won't have it? Lee Ann Rimes always comes to mind...

The lyrics are:
"It's not fair to deny me of the cross I bear that you gave to me"

The whole song, it's rumored, is about her ex lover Dave Coulier (of "Full House") who she dated when she was only 16. The cross she was bearing was the fact that he was boffing her while she was under-aged. The other lyrics in the song seem to play into this; "An older version of me; is she perverted like me; would she go down on you in a theater?" (Even Coulier admits that the lyrics "strike very close to home")

I saw the VH1 special about The Knack ("My Sharona") and yes, in fact, the song was about a girl named "Sharona".

The lyrics are:

Ooh my little pretty one, pretty one.
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Ooh you make my motor run, my motor run.
Gun it comin' off the line Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up.
Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

Come a little closer huh, ah will ya huh.
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona.
Keeping it a mystery gets to me
Running down the length of my thighs, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up. Such a dirty mind.
Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

When you gonna give it to me, give it to me.
It is just a matter of time Sharona
Is it just destiny, destiny?
Or is it just a game in my mind, Sharona?
Never gonna stop, give it up.
Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

... interestingly another reference to "younger" lovers.

Seems there's a lot of pedophiles in the music business....

(thinking of other songs...)
"She was only 16" - Rolling Stones
"You're 16 (You're beautiful and you're mine)" - Ringo Starr
"Young Girl" - Gary Puckett and the Union Gap

... the list goes on and on....

"She was only 16" - Rolling Stones

Oh, good lord... my mistake.

"She was only 16" wasn't by the Rolling Stones, it was by "Dr. Hook". I had a brain fart, because they also did a song called "Cover of the Rolling Stone".

My thought-train derailed. ;-)

She Was Only Only 16 (if it's the one I'm thinking of) was by Sam Cooke originally I believe. How do you equate being 16 with being 'under-age'? Or perhaps you're not in the UK?

I want to be good, is that not enough?

In the US, it's 18 for sex and military service, 21 for booze.

Which explains the proliferation of fake IDs....

And, yes, it makes no sense that we can send an 18 year old off to fight a war, but (s)he can't have a beer before they go!

LNBruno,
legal age of consent is state-dependent. In Indiana, the legal age is 16, and I know there are other states with the legal age at 16 as well.

Hey! Great news! I'm moving to Indiana! ;-)

Leave it to Frank Zappa:

I *think* that in Minnesota, "under-aged" is "OK", as long as there is less than a 2-year difference... but I'm not positive on that. In other words, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old can do the horizontal bop, but if a 19 year old and a 16 year old do the matress mambo, it's a no-no.

And ASAIK in Spain it is 13.

(Just plain barmy to my mind).

Back in the '80's when I was laboring as a nightclub DJ there was a song by a band called Klymaxx called "The Men All Pause".

Can't tell you how many times people asked me to play "The Menopause" song.

On a similar note, when I was a DJ at a radio station, "Shake Your Booty" was hot (mid 70's). I can't tell you the number of calls I got for "Shake Your Booby!"

Yes! Good song! "The Men All Pause". That one didn't make it nearly as big as their hit "I Miss You".

mjldba: Do you remember "Starpoint"? They were about the same time as Klymaxx. They had a couple of nice songs, one ballad called "'Till the end of time". "Object of My Desire" was pretty good, too. The lead singer for Starpoint had an *amazing* voice.

Yep, remember all of those. I can get all soggy-eyed whenever VH1 does a "100 Greatest Dance Hits of the '80's" type program. Have not heard the songs in years but I can instantly remember the lyrics, the breaks, the hooks, the BPM's and stuff. Turn off the lights, crank-up the home theatre and I'm back in the booth makin' 'em sweat.

Do you remember the '80's bands called BB&Q and Change?

First Change LP (any body remember the LP?) featured songs like "Holiday" and "Glow of Love" which featured lead singer Luthor Vandross.

BB&Q (Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens) Band had big hits with "On The Beat" and "Fascination". If you could check the album credits, they featured the same writers, producers (Maurio Malavasi & Jacque Fred Petrus), and artists on the same label including Vandross.

Always wondered how many of the '80's bands were reshuffeled components of other bands which lead to the glut of one-hit wonders and smash dance hits that were never supported by a touring band.

A classic example from the film Modern Times, Charlie's nonsense song.

The whole scene in the film is about the character forgetting the words to the song he is about to sing, so he makes all the words up.

It is impossible to remember all the words, it took years for them to transcribe it.
