How is different Driving While Intoxicated vs Driving Under the Influence? Isn't this the same thing?

It is the same thing. Different places phrase it differently.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

This is what interesting - language wise it is the same thing but law wise it is:

Driving while intoxicated (DWI) and driving under the influence (DUI). DWIs are issued to those who are driving with above the legal limit of alcohol in their system. DUIs are issued when a driver is driving while on drugs that impair their ability to operate the vehicle safely.

So the answer would be - 'depends'...

I like Ladyazh's suggestion for what drunks can use when they have had waaaaay tooooo much:

Some states have different laws for when you're driving while drunk vs. driving while impaired (aka drugs)

I think "impaired" probably covers both cases -- but it depends on how the local prosecutors handle things.

Now, only if they had a law banning "driving while stupid"...

chiph,
you want to drive alone on the roads, dontya?:)

chiph,
you want to have roads all to yourself, dontya?:)

could one also be stopped for DUIC or DUIT?
As in Driving under the influence of caffeine(yes caffeine is a 'drug' )
And Driving under the influence of Tobacco (tobacco = drug also).
I just need to stir this up because many do not understand that all of these, although legal are still a drug.

Im absolutely posting this to stir it up a bit.

I believe that if it is impairing your driving ability, any drug (regardless of legality) can result in a DUI.

vsc,
giving into your stirring the pot I should say smoking can impare driving as much as talking to the person on a passenger seat. Or cell phone (here is where stirrer was).
Imagine they giving you a bad or good news while you driving or they yelling or sneezing too loud...BOOOM!!!
An accident! Driving is dangerous people so is life itself!
Conclusion? Let those drunks off the hook, they are innocent!:))

HeHeHe...Apparently, Phil, you're the only one that caught the 'Depends' comment.<grin> Goodonya.

Tell that to the families of the nearly 17,000 people that died as the result of a drunk driver.
In 2005, 16,885 people died in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes, accounting for 39% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States (NHTSA 2006).
Drunk driving accidents are 100% preventable. There is absolutely no excuse for even 1 drunk driving fatality. Driving is dangerous enough without adding alcohol.

It is not something to be trivialized and it is not something to be condoned. European countries have it right. Drunk Driving should = lost liscense.

I remember one OWI case, the police report for which was printed in my local newspaper. A man left a local juke joint, drunk, on a horse and got into an accident with a car.

The police report stated that "Vehicle B died at the scene".

I heard once that in one South American country the penalty for drunk driving is death - don't know if it's true.

The police report stated that "Vehicle B died at the scene".

They had a case near me where the guy had had his license revoked (for multiple DUI convictions), so he started commuting to/from the bars on his lawn mower (again, while drunk).

Since there wasn't a law against this at the time, there wasn't much they could do beyond charging him for being drunk in public (open-container law). The legislature passed a law the very next session, really broadening the definition of "drunk driving". All because of this one idiot.
