Hopefully somebody out there has already done what I am trying to do and can help me avoid a potential problem and wasting time.

I am planning to replace a 406 with VoiceMail Pro on 3.2 with a brand new 500 V2 and 8.0, there is still a lot of confusion with my distributor and Avaya about the Voicemail Pro license and if moving the license will require to purchase an essential or upgrade license to be able to go to 8.0 on the new device, has anybody performed this type of upgrade already?
What about the 90 day free upgrade is that still available? What if I first upgrade to 7.0, do I need to purchase the upgrade or essential license to go from 7.0 to 8.0 during the free 90 day upgrade period?

Sorry if i was a bit short on the previous answer.
I need some sleep i guess :)

The upgrade licence is not that much, give it at cost price and you and your customer are happy, they will not on the other hand be happy in a couple of months when it stops working because you have believed the people who are guessing/misinterpreted the documents :)

Example: if a customer first powered up the IP Office with Release 7.0 they are entitled to R8.0 within the 90 day period without charge for a R8.0 upgrade license.

For single site IP Offices with Preferred and or Advanced Edition there is no additional impact. These customers will have no upgrade issues. For multi-site network with centralized voicemail there is no upgrade issue. It is recommended that the customer upgrade (first) to the IP Offices with Preferred/Advanced edition to reduce possible loss in functionalities.

Existing customers with Preferred Edition will not need to buy an Essential Edition license for their system. The Essential Edition license will be implied.

That whole piece of text is valid but it is not veru clear that you will need an upgrade license.

The upgrade license will give that essential edition license.

8.0 needs the essential as prequisite for preferred, no matter what.
Two ways to get it:

1) buy essential license
2) buy upgrade license

I don't know, it says that existing customers do not need the essential edition license, and going from R7 to R8 does not need an upgrade license.

If the Essential is IMPLIED for existing VMPRO customers...then why would one need to buy the license.

Are they IMPLYING that you NEED it!?

Is it only IMPLIED if you already get the upgrade license?

The first paragraph is true, they do get R8 free ....basic edition.

The second paragraph is true, they will have no "UPGRADE" issues, they will have purchased the upgrade licence and so get essential edition free.

The last paragraph is also true, existing customers will need the upgrade licence and so again essential edition licence is implied. :)

Screw it. I'll just let the sales people keep selling it without the upgrade license or essential license and just let it all burn.

Then i'll get paid for support tickets to add licensing in 90 days.

Whatever.

AACon I was as confused and as upset as you are now because it was not making any sense to me particularly with the Voicemail Pro upgrade but it is very simple anything beyond Muppet mode is not free anymore, that includes the 90 day upgrade and moving voicemail pro to a new box with R8, to upgrade or move the voicemail Pro license you need the R8 upgrade or the Essential edition license.

I guess I can work with that.

Its hard to convince everyone else otherwise though. I suppose they will see in ~90 days.

Insert a New SD every 90 days is also a good option :)

Austin,

Example: if a customer first powered up the IP Office with Release 7.0 they are entitled to R8.0 within the 90 day period without charge for a R8.0 upgrade license.

If you upgrade during "entitlement" you do not need an upgrade license because it is not an upgrade. A software during entitlement is considered a new R8 system and is subject to R8 license requirements.

You are referencing an upgrade in this case and an upgrade requires an upgrade license. Again, a system upgraded during entitlement is not an "upgrade" and as such there is no "implied" Essential Edition license.

Ah okay so the terminology is what gets confusing.

So I guess a better way to think of it is...with you install R8 within 90 days, it is R8 and has NEVER been R7.

All of my licenses that I'm transferring from an R5 or 6 system (lets say voicemail pro) would be invalid because on the NEW R8 systems, voicemail pro does not work without an essential edition license.

R8 comes with a trial of essential edition (even though it does not say trial, but virtual) so my licenses will work for 90 days and then go kaput.

I think I got it now. The word upgrade is used a little loosely.

Yep. If it helps think of it this way:

Upgrades during entitlement completely erase the IP Office's memory of ever being anything other than what it is after the upgrade.

Correct, and with voicemail pro you have the option of spending more money and purchasing the essential edition or get the less expensive upgrade license, the premium you pay with the essential edition license is simply to avoid having to mess with R7.0 and then upgrading, it enables you to do R8.0 directly.

You can apply the Software Upgrade 5 license without ever having had R7 on the system and go directly to R8.

There are no IPO with 8 out of the box. Every new install will require going from 7 to 8.

Lic on 7 before 8
Power User
IP500 Universal PRI
Preferred Edition
Preferred Edition Additional VoiceMail Ports
Power User
IP500 Universal PRI (Additional channels)

Lic added to 8
Virtual Advanced Edition
Virtual Customer Service Agent
Virtual Supervisor User
Virtual Essential Edition
Virtual Mobile User
Virtual Office Worker User
Virtual Power User
Virtual Preferred Edition
Virtual Receptionist AddOn
Virtual Teleworker User

So what we are saying in that the all "virtual" will expire after 90 day?

I talked to Catalyst support, they said that the design is if I have preferred editon, then voice mail pro will still work after 90 day. There might be a bug and that Avaya is working on it. Can anyone confrim?

Since all my phones are 9508, I need the ipo 8.

Please post if there are any new info.

Just talked with Avaya support, they said it is not a bug and that upgarde is free only for ip office, not for voice mail pro. Going back to 7.

Our channel manager was in the office last week and I asked him this exact question. You can upgrade to release 8 from release 7 during the entitlement period as long as you have the release 7 preferred. I then told him about everyones experience of the virtual essential invalidating after 90 days. He confirmed this will happen but it is a bug. They are currently working on a fix. It is a known problem. If you have a system that is affected, they will tell your distributor to give you an upgrade license free. This is exactly the same thing my distributor told me.

the never ending thread... it seems to get more confusing the more I read. Taking preferred edition/vmpro out of the equation.

I have a new IP500v2 R7 booted up, it's running the essential version IP Office mode.

Can I just order the R8 upgrade license and the system will become a IP500v2 R8 running essential edition IP office mode permanently after upgrading it through manager?

gtelcom - Yes, the IPO will still be running in essential edition after 90 days if you are using the upgrade license.

The only confused situation is the 90 days entitlement period discussion. But I am 100 % with kholladay how it works with upgrading and I have also verifed this with Avaya for many weeks ago.
