Hopefully somebody out there has already done what I am trying to do and can help me avoid a potential problem and wasting time.

I am planning to replace a 406 with VoiceMail Pro on 3.2 with a brand new 500 V2 and 8.0, there is still a lot of confusion with my distributor and Avaya about the Voicemail Pro license and if moving the license will require to purchase an essential or upgrade license to be able to go to 8.0 on the new device, has anybody performed this type of upgrade already?
What about the 90 day free upgrade is that still available? What if I first upgrade to 7.0, do I need to purchase the upgrade or essential license to go from 7.0 to 8.0 during the free 90 day upgrade period?

I think it will do that but indeed those 90 days are not over yet.

I shot an email over to avaya pre sales tech support...hopefully they can shed some light on it.

I had two systems that went from v7 to v8 under the 90 day window and the 'free' upgrade did not work. Once 90'days hit, all our licenses invalidated.

I had removed the upgrade license from my lab system during EI and left only the legacy Preferred Edition license. The system stopped working after a few months. This was a new 500v2 that I purchased for EI and had upgraded during entitlement.

Indeed, proof enough that what we have been saying is true :)

Hey Kyle
Kyle said:
If you have an R7 system that upgrade to R8 during the 90day entitlement period then what you've installed is an R8 system, NOT an R7 system, and thus all the license requirements for R8 apply.

If you have an R7 system that you upgrade using an upgrade license then you've installed an R7 system that has been upgraded to R8 and thus the R7 license requirements apply e.g. no requirement for Essential Edition.[/Quote Kyle]

This is the easiest way I have heard it described and makes the most sense in my head, have some pink.

I was also very confused but it is very simple:

First of all everybody must be clear and understand that with R8 there are no more free upgrades, period, under any circumstance even when moving an old VMPRO (Preferred license) to R8, in other words to move a VMPRO License, upgrade a 90 day system or an older system from any release to R8 you have two options and only two options; purchase an upgrade license or purchase an essential edition license:

Upgrade License: For this option you can use the less expensive upgrade license, and as everybody already knows you just upgrade to R8 and the implied essential edition license will be created and you are good to go. If you are moving a preferred license from an old box to a new 500 V2 (this was my initial question) you need to first load R7, move the VMPRO license, install the new purchased upgrade license and then upgrade to R8.

Essential Edition: This option is only going to help you save one step when moving a preferred license from an old box to a new 500 V2 R8 but it is more expensive. Simply load R8.0, load your more expensive brand new Essential Edition license, load your VMPRO license and you are good to go, the premium you are paying for here is to save you the time to first load 7 and then upgrading to 8.

So I asked pre-sales support @ Avaya about the licenses going bad after 90 days:

"Austin,
It should not be true. Check with your distributor to see if a bug ticket has been opened on it and check with your CAM to see if there is anything they can do."

Yay Avaya. Maybe its just a bug.

According to Avaya ATAC it is just the way R8 is it is not a bug, without the upgrade license the implied essential edition license will go invalid 90 days after the first outgoing call, this was confirmed by our distributor, Avaya ATAC, our distributor tech support team and our distributor's Avaya rep.
I had to ask because I was caught with an upgrade project that was originally quoted on R7 and was approved just before R8 came out and I wanted to offer our customer the new system on the latest release, originally everybody told me "no problem you are good to go, no extra cost, the implied license will be created" but then everybody started to back peddle on me, conflicting versions and finally a few days ago everybody confirmed: "you have to add the cost of the upgrade or the essential edition or leave it on R7"

I would love to be proven wrong but I cannot take a chance on a production system, maybe 60 or so days from now are going to begin to see users posting questions asking why their Voicemail Pro all of a sudden stopped working and then we will know for sure, right?

Believe me, get the upgrade license or leave it on 7.0!!!

It looks like that.
I think i have tried explaining this a couple of times now on different threads and nobody seems to accept it.

I get it, but you wait and see, I can almost see the questions that are going to be posted on the forum about Voicemail Pro in about 60 days from now
I decided I am going to bite the bullet and purchase the upgrade license for this customer and I am going to load it on the system but I am still debating if I leave the system on 7 or take it to 8, which one is more stable? what do you guys recommend?

I would go for 8.0.16
That software version has less problems with the 9508 and VMPro.

This upgrade project only has 5400 and 5600 but just in case they decide to get new phones...I will follow your advice.

Thanks everybody....

I thought my explanation was pretty clear. I cannot imagine how anybody was confused by it.

If you upgrade withing entitlement (90 days) for "free" it isn't, wasn't nor will it ever be a 7.0 system. It is a NEW 8.0 system, not an upgrade, and requires the Essential Edition license. Period, done, end of story. It doesn't matter what you want to believe nor what you wish it were.

Kyle, you are absolutely right.
It is new thus an essential edition license is needed.
When not new then an upgrade license is needed.

The confusion started where even some distri's announced that the "old" VMPro license did not need the essential license but it appears that they all are coming back on that story.
