Hopefully somebody out there has already done what I am trying to do and can help me avoid a potential problem and wasting time.

I am planning to replace a 406 with VoiceMail Pro on 3.2 with a brand new 500 V2 and 8.0, there is still a lot of confusion with my distributor and Avaya about the Voicemail Pro license and if moving the license will require to purchase an essential or upgrade license to be able to go to 8.0 on the new device, has anybody performed this type of upgrade already?
What about the 90 day free upgrade is that still available? What if I first upgrade to 7.0, do I need to purchase the upgrade or essential license to go from 7.0 to 8.0 during the free 90 day upgrade period?

It's also the fact you can cheat it by using the upgrade licence that confuses people I think :)

And to drive the point home...Here is how you can tell. The moment you add any license, including the legacy Preferred Edition the "implied" or "virtual" Essential Edition license is deleted.

711679451mS PRN: Config Write Completed
711679476mS LIC: Deleted 92, R8+ Preferred Edition (Virtual Preferred Edition)
711679477mS LIC: Deleted 68, Advanced Edition (Virtual Advanced Edition)
711679477mS LIC: Deleted 67, Power User (Virtual Power User)
711679478mS LIC: Deleted 55, Customer Service Agent (Virtual Customer Service Agent)
711679478mS LIC: Deleted 63, Supervisor User (Virtual Supervisor User)
711679479mS LIC: Deleted 65, Teleworker User (Virtual Teleworker User)
711679479mS LIC: Deleted 66, Mobile User (Virtual Mobile User)
711679480mS LIC: Deleted 69, Office Worker User (Virtual Office Worker User)
711679481mS LIC: Deleted 16, Receptionist AddOn (Virtual Receptionist AddOn)

Lemme ask this then. If the essential ed license is required, what's the point of the virtual essential ed license it generates?

Weak or not, that's the answer and also the reason all those licences are deleted once any purchased licence is present, as then they have obviously decided what they want :)

They just wanted you to have trial licenses for all those options.
I like the idea but it would show an expire dat so that it is clear for everybody that looks in the config.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

Well it is done, my first production R8.0 upgrade, last night I successfully switched an old 406 on 3.2 with Preferred Edition to a brand new 500 V2 on 8.0 with a mix bag of modules. I first upgraded to 7.0 then loaded the upgrade license that I purchase and finally upgraded to R8.0 and to my surprise all the licenses stayed the exactly the same as when on R7.0, nothing changed, nothing was added, nothing was removed, I was expecting to see the Essential Edition "Implied"...I guess by implied they mean that it is bundled with Preferred Edition or the upgrade license is the implied license, who knows...!

Thanks everybody...!

If it hadn't worked the system would not run or allow calls and the handsets would all show an alarm/error on the screen. It never does show the implied licence as you may expect :)

Amriddle, I will agree with you if the system was over 90 days old, however it doesn't and that is one of the problems and part of the reason for so much confusion and probably why you will see a flood of posts about 60 days from now...people are upgrading to R8.0 within the 90 days without being aware that is no longer free and without reading the Technical Bulletin...I do not understand why Avaya did not setup R8 to react exactly the way you are saying by removing the 90 day grace period making things simple and clear.

[surprise]

I "found" the R8 software before the beta trials started and upgraded our Demo system just to see what would happen (which is well over the 90 days now) and not adding the licence has resulted in the behaviour I mentioned above, that's what I am basing my comments on. Perhaps the GA version will be different but I doubt it :)

That is the reason why every engineer should ALWAYS read the tech bulletin.
A major release has major changes so that is why a major upgrade should be done by a good certified engineer with proper knowledge of the system.
Every muppet can click a button with a mouse but not every muppet is capable of doing a proper upgrade without breaking a running system!

If i was running a company, and an engineer did not read the tech bulletin for a major release, and then break a system with an upgrade would be sacked!!!

Peter, I agree with you but you have to concede that even if you read the technical bulletin when it came to moving a voicemail pro or preferred license everybody expected it to be free because that is the way it has been for ever until release 8 and the language on the bulletin is confusing to the point that ATAC, Avaya reps and distributors were confused and just look at the size of this thread.

:)

To be fair Avaya can be very selective in their wording of the tech bulletin, for example:

The Avaya IP Office Essential Edition License will enable mobile twinning and one-X Mobile Essential client for all users and provide two Home Worker / Remote Worker seats. The Home / Remote worker feature provides remote connectivity to the IP Office system without the need for a VPN concentrator interfacing to the IP Office system. Customers requiring more than two seats will purchase the Teleworker User package for this capability

that last sentence should really say "Customers requiring more than two seats will purchase the Teleworker User package for this capability, which means a Preferred edition licence is also required as it is a pre-requisite for any User licences :)

Untitled-1.png

To be honest, i do not see why this is not clear?
I understand that the confusion is made by the distri's saying that you do not need it with an pre R8 preferred license.

Code:
3.1.4 Avaya IP Office Essential Edition License
In IP Office R7.0, no license was required to switch from Essential Edition Quick mode, Partner Version or Norstar Version to IP Office Essential edition Standard mode.
In release R8.0, IP Office Basic Edition, Basic Edition Partner Mode and Basic Edition Norstar Mode continue to require no licenses. [b]However, upgrading these to Essential edition now requires the Essential Edition License to be applied to the system.[/b]
[b]The Essential Edition is a pre-requisite for Preferred Edition. The Preferred Edition will not work if the Essential Edition license is not present.[/b]
Note: The Preferred Edition users will have mobile twinning enabled for all users and retain access to the Avaya one-X® Mobile Essential for IP Office client features (included with Essential edition license).

I'm hoping that these issues were just with the beta release, and not the GA release.

We have a handful of NEW IP500 V2 w/ R7, being up graded to R8 the first day, with licenses coming over from old 406's with voicemail pro. I sure hope we dont' hear in 90 days we need additional upgrade or essential licenses at these sites.

That dosen't really say much. I still cannot figure out why half the people say its fine and will work, and the rest say it wont.

WTF is the point of creating the essential license (VIRTUAL) when you upgrade DURING the 90 days, to then have it INVALIDATE after such leaving you with a broke ass system and saying "sorry mr customer, plz can i haz $500 more dollarz!!!???"

I mean really, WTF is the point even. Customer pays out the arse for a 406 or 412 with VMPRO and all the bells, buys a NEW 500, upgrades to R8...and then OOPS none of the crap you bought before works now.

From a $$ standpoint, okay, yes, we all like to make money.

None of the people I work with believe me that this shit will go awry in 90 days. Oh well. I'm basing it all on what you guys say though.

The virtual licenses are trial licenses!!!

Is there a document from a Avaya that states that?
