Just to add, in the system administrator quide chapter 5 it said to make a log of the unsecsessful logins just make a file called loginlog in the /usr/adm directory. I have done so giving both owner/group to audit and still I can't get it to log the unsecessful logins. What I am doing wrong?

OS: SCO 5.0.0 I need to be able to list all the logins and logouts including any unsucessfull ones. I have looked in the adminstrators guide, and I am somewhat sure this information is located in the /etc/utmp and /etc/wtmp files but they are both compacted or encrypted. Any help you all...

    strange error when running FSCK

You could try it, but it sounds like the hard drive is bad. Once you get the read error message, its time to either wipe the drive and start over or replace the drive.

    HW Reconmendation

We are using the same card and haven't had any problems. I would make sure that the SCSI ID numbers match up on the drive and the Adaptec setup and also check for termination problems. What kind of hard drive are you using IDE or SCSI? If IDE, make sure the tape drive is terminated. If SCSI...

WARNING: apic - no BIOS Information found for irq 15

If I remember right SCO support for SMP just came out for version 5.07 and even now its not right according to their docs. You may have to reinstall from scratch to at least get the system up and running.

Network SCO box with remote office using Dial-Up

Do you want to do this automaticaly or manualy? On either case do a man on uucp for some help. You will need to setup your modem in the /usr/lib/uucp/Devices file, the /usr/lib/uucp/Systems file, the /etc/inittab and in the /etc/gettydefs files. Again first thing to do is man on uucp. Also, you...

Intermittant error causing an SCO Openserver 5.0.6 system to lock up.

Have you tried removing the PCI Multi IO card and the drivers and see if the computer has any problems? Sounds like a driver/hardware issue with the PCI Multi IO card. Could be a interrupt problem where the OS has reserved a particular IRQ for a device and the PCI Multi IO card defaults to the...

    Backup Failure

The error message indicates that it can't find the start of the backup or the information on the tape is not in cpio format. Do you rewind the tape before backing up the data? I would retentention the tape try a backup, then rewind the tape and see if the backup succeded.
  16. tb1254

cpio - cpio: this is not a cpio file, bad header

I agree with the above posts and would add you should first rewind the tape before you issue the backup script then when you verify, rewind the tape again to insure that you are starting at the begining of the tape.

running uutry does not succeed from remote

It sounds like the server is not enabled for remote login. Try man uucp to help for the settings. If I remember right you will need some sort of login script for the remote site to pass in order to have access to the server. Also take a look at nuucp user account, you may have to change some...

Upgrading ... What's the danger in that?

Try to set up the second PC exactly the same as your current server. It will then be a simple backup the server and reload on the second one. Linux has it's own little annoyances (kernel rebuilds) but there is a bunch more resources out there for Linux than for SCO.

    motherboard compatibility with 5.0.x

I remember something on the SCO web site about P4 support, on the maintance pack 1 or update pack 2 for SCO 5.07. <snip SCO 5.07 Upadate Pack 2 Installation notes> Serial ATA is supported by the iir driver only for the Intel RAID Controller (PCI) card Model SRCS14L. As a rule...
