can log file messages be deleted?

For future reference, if you want to clear out a file (while it is still in use), issue a "> filename". This is a shortcut to copy /dev/null to the file. Hope this helps.

    File find scripts, help required.

I use a program called LOCATE (http://www.uku.fi/~jmhuttun/english/softwares.shtml). You schedule it to run nightly (or whenever you want) and it will catalog all the items on the drives you specified, and create a db. When you search, you search against the db which is lightning quick. I've...

    IP address

Taken from http://www.petri.co.il/ (the site has changed so I can't find the exact link, but here is an excerpt from my cached copy) ******************************************* To save your current IP settings: netsh -c interface dump > c:\data\interface.txt To restore (or configure) your...

    Install Office? Virus?

This can also happen when you use a feature that you have not installed (like another language spelling dictionary, etc). You probably did not do a full install, and so when office detects it needs this new functionality, it tries to install it from the source. I usually create a network share...

How To: Format a Tape with the proper Date

Following up on my own post.... Adding the job to the pre job section did not work, ends up giving you an error #224. Reading elsewhere, people seem to add the job with the Job Wizard. Adding it minutes before my full nightly backup properly erases the tape, and the format then labels the tape...

message from /var/log/messages is killing me

Sounds like whatever user your DNS runs under does not have permissions to modify the file (or date/time of the file). I'd check permissions.

How To: Format a Tape with the proper Date

Thanks for the reply davidmichel. So now I'm assuming I run a pre-job of ca_devmgr -erase <adapter id> <scsi id> q to erase the tape before the backup starts. Sound right? Thanks.

How To: Format a Tape with the proper Date

I run a full nightly backup 5 days a week (Mon-Fri). I have 3 weeks worth of tapes, but don't use a rotation scheme. My Question: The backup job is set up to "Overwrite Same Media Name, or Blank Media First, then Any Media". It formats the tape, but does not label the tape with the current...

need cheap program to track web history :(

There should be a bunch of freeware applications that allow you to review the user's browing habits. Been a while since I've used these tools, so I'm not sure if they are still around: Cache Reader Galetta - Cookie Reader Pasco - IE Index Viewer Spider Most people don't realize that MS...

Poweredge 2600 and APC Smart UPS

Are you waiting long enough? The powerchute software has an option to start the server once the battery has recharged to x% (mine is set to 15%). In the Powerchute console, under Shutdown - Power Failure. Check the setting: When power returns, reboot UPS. I never had to monkey with the...

    APC Rack Height

Not that this really helps, but after I moved a whole bunch of APC UPS's, I was told that you can remove the batteries in them first. Makes the units a lot lighter if you do have to carry them up the stairs. Good luck with the elevator!!

    samba on solaris 9

I noticed the same thing on mine, and went trudging through the source code. Seems I missed the configure --with-smbmount. Tried that, but I got "checking whether to use smbmount... configure: error: not on a linux system!" Sigh, I guess that answers that question.

SMTP connection errors... Check Point Firewall FP3

I've seen this behaviour before on different firewalls. Is the fw looking from connections originating on port 25 as well as a destination port 25? I don't think you can specify the originating port in a normal telnet window, but you can with netcat nc -p 25 destination 25 Hope this helps.

Slow copying to server, but not from server

I've had similar problems, but ONLY with WinXP TO the server (it's a well know MS problem, with solutions in their Knoweledge Base) Are you having problems with WinXp only, or other platforms?

DNS server unable to interpret format Error

What kind of DNS server (and version) are you running? Sounds like your DNS server is unable to accept Dynamic Updates - which is a requirement of Win2k.
