We use an analytics service for our web traffic (which looks to the IIS logs). Problem is, we pay by the line. So we needed an automated parsing tool to remove the heartbeat checks, bot and crawler lines (which is quite a few lines).
With some trial and error, I put together the following batch...

i wasn't the one to set this server up, and some hoople head had modified permissions on the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory, knocking everyone but himself out of that directory...

Hi, using windows 2003 sp2, with no DNS host configured, and using the hosts file. It's not resolving the entered IP addresses.
what's strange, when i try 'ipconfig /displaydns' it reports the ip addresses to the hosts i want to connect to, but it resolves it backwards.
if i ping the IP...
add a "/yes" to the end of each line. it will force the "yes" response.
eg.
net use s: /d /yes

It's free (2007 version is pretty handy)...
You'll of course need a license for whatever OS you're installing, but it's invaluable.

try searching and deleting *.bud , *.spl,*.shd also run 'tasklist /svc' or use process explorer to see what thread is running under spoolsv... Also maybe a printer driver got corrupted, try uninstall/reinstall printers...

using RDP, when you disconnect from the workstation, it merely remains in a "Workstation Locked" state, with whatever apps running, still running.
using VNC, when you connect with the password you provided, it connects to the PC using whatever state it currently is in. and when you disconnect...
in some ATX systems, if there is a static charge, the mobo disables a power up. what you can also try (before or after edfair's suggestions) is unplug the power supply from the wall, and hit the CMOS reset switch (sometimes it's a jumper switch, sometimes it's a little button) for 60 seconds...
to elaborate: if you are still in safe mode, you will only see 16 colors at 640x480 resolution... you would need to restart and boot normal mode to get your colors back... however, if you DID reboot in normal mode and still only get the 16+640x480, then your video driver may have become...
ok... when SMS is installed, a system reboot. Occasionally, after login the Add Hardware Wizard opens. It is detecting the SMS Hardware Inventory Agent, and attempting to locate the drivers... which don't exist.
So far, the only fix for this we have found is Re-Image. this is not a reasonable...
strange thing... after SMS in configured, and after a reboot or 2, in Windows 2k, it starts the new hardware wizard, and looks for drivers for the different SMS services.
any thoughts? any suggestions on how to stop or fix it? Shane

when XP comes to the Profile selection step, press CTRL+ALT+DEL and enter the username of Administrator. More than likely, when it was setup, the Admin password was left blank... so, leave the password blank...
now, if one of your kids changed THAT password, then... i would suggest sending...
