I frequently install printers in a test environment, testing functionality of print drivers within stated parameters. I recently installed a set of drivers, preformed the desired tests and deleted the printers and driver files via the server properties as usual. Now when I install printers the Add Printer wiz. prompts for a printer file in the $win_nt.~ls folder which does not exist since it was deleted when I removed the driver files. How do I prevent the wiz. from prompting for the non-existent file(s) each time I install a new printer; or change the default search location (which would accomplish the same thing)?

Try pointing it to C:\Windows\system32 often works for me for deleted drivers.

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

I'd also suggest using Microsoft Virtual PC for testing...
It's free (2007 version is pretty handy)...

You'll of course need a license for whatever OS you're installing, but it's invaluable.

When you're done with your testing, you can choose to close the VM and delete all changes, leaving the OS pristine. very handy for testing network installs, software testing, etc...

I know this doesn't help now, but it might help down the road...
