I know this is possible with SMS, but alas my current customer does not have the money for an SMS installation. Is there a way for an admin to remote control into a workstation witout kicking off/locking out the display of the current user? We want to remote in so both ends can see what is going on at the same time. Is TightVNC the only free alternative, or is there a way to tweak the native Windows Remote Desktop function to allow this?

Not using Remote Desktop, but you can use NetMeeting.

is there a way to use remote assistance without using messenger or outlook express?

Not that I am aware of. You could use Netmeeting instead.

Is netmeeting bundled with XP where can I get it? Thought that went the way of the dodo or is being phased out by Microsoft. If we go with TightVNC do we need to open up any ports on the firewalls to allow TightVNC to work?

Yes, it comes with XP. You just need to run the installation. You can find it under

c:\program files\netmeeting

Run the conf.exe to install the program.

or just click Start>Run

and then type "CONF" and click run.

There are a lot of VNC programs out there, TightVNC is a very usefull tool that we use here to allow users to see what we are doing on their machines and allow multiple people to VNC into the system.

Personally I am a fan of the VNC program.

Don't drink and post, save that for driving home!

tools i have used previously for remote control are dameware and timbuktu - not sure about relative costs but dameware is constantly in development and very good - free is always preferable but sometimes you have to spend !

Absolutely. You can save the invitation as a file and send it any way you like.
