HP Pavilion. A couple of hours ago I got one of those automatic downloads from Microsoft with seven security updates. Something in my gut told me not to install them, but having had no prior problems with this procedure, I went ahead and installed them. Murphy's Law was invoked, and now Window Explorer will not expand into any trees; the bugger just locks up when any plus block is clicked on, forcing me to use My Computer to fiddle with files, which is a major P in the A. Anbody else having this problem?

Have you rebooted since the updates went in?

Each update creates a restore point, so you could try going back one update at a time using System Restore to see if you can find the problem update.

Do you have this problem in Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode as another user?

Did all of that, but system restore is out of the question for a few days. I've got too many irons in the digital fire that will disappear altogether if I do a restore. But, I did find out on the MS forum that all that is necessary is to uninstall KB908531 and everything works hunky-dory. Trouble is, the damn thing wants to reinstall itself again. I am just ignoring "automatic updates" for a while till MS gets this bug under control. Thanks!

I suggest, by reading the Link you gave, to do a software update to the HP software that is installed... since all problems relate to that...

I for one have had NO problem what so ever with that Update...

I am having a problem as well, only with IE.
Anytime I perform a File-Open and type a web address, or
when I type it into the address bar, I get an executable
called verclsid.exe started (part of the update) and IE
just locks up. I think MS dropped the ball on this one.

I get the same with Windows Explorer when trying to expand a tree.
I have found that if I kill the verclsid.exe process then
it will expand the tree. When I try to expand another tree...guess what? verclsid.exe appears and I have to kill it again. Same with typing a web address.

I did see this information from Microsoft. It might have some relevance?

This problem has shown up on several client PCs.

The symptoms aren't always the same, but they all involve problems with Windows Explorer.

Restoring the system to a time before the problem is only a temporary cure. The update continues to try installing itself (with updates turned off).

The HP-related solution suggested by Microsoft kb 918165 doesn't help.

Anyone find a real solutuion?

I applied the fix shown in the link that 'linney' provided and all worked ok. before applying the fix, I de-installed that particular security update, turned off auto-update, applied the fix, then installed the security update and turned auto-update back on. Everything is now working as it should be.

I've been waiting for the dust to settle a bit before going off the deep end. I couldn't stand it any longer, so I tried this little gem at item #383 "HP's Share to Web Software -Fix" ... ran the hp.vbs file, and now everything works normally.

Anyone know why it's affecting Dell, Gateway & Acer?
It's turning into a real PAIN!

It affects many things besides the HP photo software. Sometimes removing & reinstalling this Cumulative Security Update will resolve some problems, re-registering some .dll's helps with some problems. An updated version will be pushed out next week.

What problems are you seeing? Are you seeing some of these?

Thnx, SMAH, was gonna post that MS has been working on a solution and was gonna push out a fix on TUE...

and it seems that not only HP's are at fault, but several other software programms aswell...

btw. quick fix, rename the following file Verclsid.exe to Verclsid.old and most problems go away...

Thanks smah, I've been seeing some of those problems - along with others.
I'll try the BigBadBen approach too, but it sure would be great if Microsoft got their act together!

Im running across the same problem, its not HP related, its MS related.
Until they fix, goto sytem32 folder and rename the verclsid.ex to something else.

Got me there on the PEBKAC????

I hope you find this post helpful.
