Go into safe mode, run Msconfig and try deselecting various options to see what's causing the trouble. Start by deselecting your autoexec.bat and config.sys - Windows doen't need these anyway, they're purely for DOS options.

I tried Download Accelerator Plus recently, used it a couple of times, but it kept crashing my IE, so I uninstalled it. It obviously had a sloppy uninstall program because it`s left an annoying option in my IE right-click menu. Any notions as to how to get rid of it?
Start IE6, right click any URL and select Open in a New Window.
Go back to the first IE6 window you opened and close it.
Return to the second window and manually drag it to fill the screen.

Shut down unnecessary programs as above, then run Filemon. This will show in realtime anything that is accessing or writing to the HD and may reveal the culprit.
